BIOGRAPHY: The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans: Volume VII M. Madison, George page 214
BIOGRAPHY: MADISON, Dorothy (Payne) Todd, wife of President Madison, was born in North Carolina, May 20, 1767; daughter of John and Mary (Coles)Payne and granddaughter of John and Hannah (Fleming) Payne, and of William Coles of Coles Hill, Va. Her paternal grandfather emigrated from England to Virginia early in the 18th century and her paternal grandmother was a granddaughter of Sir Thomas Fleming, one of the pioneer settlers of Jamestown. Her parents removed to Philadelphia while Dorothy was a child and joined the Society of Friends, in which faith she was reared. She was married in 1786 to John Todd, a young lawyer of Philadelphia, Pa., who died in 1789 leaving her with an infant son. She made her home with her widowed mother in Philadelphia and assisted her in keeping a boarding house. She was married secondly in 1794 to James Madison, one of her mother's boarders, in attendance as representative from Virginia in the 3d congress. The ceremony was performed at "Harewood," Jefferson county, Va., the home of her younger sister Lucy, the wife of George Steptoe Washington. They resided at "Montpelier," Mr. Madison's summer home, until 1809 when he was appointed secretary of state and they removed to Washington, D.C. Mrs. Madison became the centre of Washington's social circle, and upon the elevation of her husband as President of the United States, she filled the position of mistress of the White House brilliantly and successfully. In 1814 the British army marched against the national capital and the President and his cabinet fled to Virginia, but Mrs. Madison remained at the White House where she packed many important cabinet papers into trunks which were put into a carriage, and as an afterthought she removed Stuart's portrait of Washington from its frame and saw it in a place of safety before leaving. She was rejoined by Mr. Madison in Washington and together they fled to Virginia. [p.214] A few days later she returned to Washington, where she found her home in ashes. The President followed the next day and they rented the house called the "Octagon" owned by Colonel Taylor, where they resided until the White House was rebuilt. In 1817, upon the expiration of President Madison's second term, they returned to Montpelier, where she lived in retirement. Congress conferred on her the franking privilege and voted her a seat upon the floor of the senate. She removed to Washington one year after her husband's death and again entered society. She died in Washington, D.C., July 12, 1849.

80. | John Jay Jackson (12.Mary3, 3.John2, 1.Mary1) was born on 13 Feb 1800 in Wood County, WV; died on 1 Jan 1877 in Wood County, WV. Notes:
History of West Virginia and the People (The Lee Line). (IV) General John Jay Jackson, son of Hon. John George Jackson, was, like his father, eminent in both the law and the army. He was born in Wood county, Virginia. February 13, 1800. He passed his early life in Parkersburg, becoming identified with its village growth and its later municipal prosperity. His education was begun under Dr. David Creel, who subsequently resided in Chillicothe, Ohio, and was afterward conducted atone of the best schools in Virginia, taught by Dr. Tower at Clarksburg in Harrison county. Young Jackson was a very apt pupil, and at thirteen years of age was admitted to Washington College, Pennsylvania, where he remained for a year, when he was appointed by President James Monroe as a cadet to West Point, which institution he entered in 1815, graduating there from in 1818, in the nineteenth year of his age. He was at once commissioned as second lieutenant in the United States army and attached to the corps of artillery ordered to Norfolk, Virginia, where he performed garrison service until the latter part of the year 1819, being then transferred to the fourth infantry. In 1820 and 1821 he performed active service in Florida in the Seminole war, and while thus engaged was commissioned as adjutant and transferred to regimental headquarters at Montpelier, Alabama. At this place and at Pensacola he was a member of General Andrew Jackson's staff. In 1822 he visited Parkersburg on a six months' furlough, and about January 1, 1823, he resigned his commission in the army and turned his attention to law. He completed his preparatory course of study and was licensed to practice law in Virginia April 28, 1823. He soon reached the front ranks in his profession, maintaining his high position to the end of his career. He was in 1826 appointed prosecuting attorney of Wood county, in the county court, and in 1830 he was appointed to the same office in the circuit superior court, holding the position until 1852, when he retired. He was also prosecutor in the circuit supreme court of Ritchie county. For six several terms he served as representative from Wood county to the Virginia house of delegates, and in each of the legislatures to which he was returned he filled a prominent position. In 1842 he was commissioned brigadier-general of the twenty-third brigade of Virginia militia, remaining in this post until the outbreak of the civil war. In politics he belonged to the school of Clay and Webster, believing in the capability of the people for self rule. He was a member of the historic convention at Richmond in 1861 and eloquently upheld the Union, this being about his last public service, though he made various speeches during and after the war in which he advocated forbearance and reconciliation. He was active in every enterprise for the benefit of the community; when the Baltimore & Ohio railway sought right of way from the Potomac to the Ohio, he urged needed legislation, and was one of the earliest and largest contributors to the subscription stock toward the building of the Northwestern Virginia railroad. In later years his means and time were largely used to promote the improvement of the Little Kanawha river, forming a company which erected locks and dams to make it navigable the year round. He organized and was president of the Second National Bank of Parkersburg, and was at various times member of the municipal council and mayor of the city. He died January 1, 1877, leaving to posterity the memory of a fame which rested more upon his legal ability than his political successes. Like his cousin, "Stonewall" Jackson, he was a superb horseman; and like him was also temperate, persevering and purposeful, possessing unusual natural gifts. He was a member of the Episcopal church, and was for over forty years senior warden of Trinity parish. General Jackson married (first) Emma G. Beeson in 1823; she died in 1842; married (second) Jane E. B. Gardner in 1843. He was the father of five sons: Hon. Judge John Jay Jackson, United States District Judge James Monroe Jackson, Governor Jacob Beeson Jackson, Henry Clay Jackson and Andrew Gardner, of whom further. Also three daughters living at the time of his death: Mrs. William H. Small, Mrs. George W. Thompson, Mrs. William H. Smith.

PILLOW, Gideon Johnson, soldier, was born in Williamson county, Tenn., July 8, 1806; son of Gideon and Annie (Payne) Pillow; grandson of John and Mary (Johnson) Pillow, and of Josiah Paine, a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and great-grandson of Jaspar Pillow, who emigrated from England in 1740, and settled in the Virginia colony. His paternal grandfather and his two great-uncles, Jaspar and William Pillow, were Revolutionary soldiers and were present at the surrender of Cornwallis, and his father was a soldier under General Jackson, and was conspicuous in the attack on the Indian fortress Nickajack. Gideon Johnson Pillow was graduated from the University of Nashville in 1827, studied law under Judge W. E. Kennedy and William L. Brown, established himself in practice in Columbia, Tenn., and became a prominent member of the Tennessee bar. He was a member of the staff of Gov. William Carroll, with the rank of brigadier general, 1829-35, a delegate to the Democratic national convention of 1844, and afterward made a canvass for James K. Polk. Upon the [p.330] outbreak of the war with Mexico, he was commissioned brigadier-general, U.S. army, July 13, 1846, and reported with a brigade of Tennessee volunteers to General Taylor, at Camargo, Mexico. He was engaged at the battle of Vera Cruz, where he was complimented for gallantry; Cerro Gordo, where he was severely wounded and was commissioned major-general, and during the campaign that followed was second in command. He was present at Contreras, Cherubusco and Chapultepec, and at the latter place his ankle was crushed by a grape shot and he was in hospital for three months. He favored pressing the Mexican army to the extreme boundary of the country, making the final capitulation beyond the Sierra Madre, which became known as the "Pillow line" and was afterward admitted by military experts to be correct. He was later arrested by General Scott, on charges of insubordination, but was completely vindicated by the court of inquiry. He returned to his home in Maury county, Tenn., relinquished his law practice and engaged extensively in farming in Tennessee and Arkansas. He was a delegate to the Southern convention held at Nashville in 1850, and favored a conservative policy. At the Democratic national convention of 1852 he received twenty-five votes for nomination for vice president. He opposed secession until the outbreak of the civil war, when he was appointed by Gov. Isham G. Harris major-general in the provisional army of Tennessee, May 9, 1861. He organized a force of 35,000 men, and on July 9, 1861, was commissioned brigadier-general in the Confederate army. He commanded the Confederate forces stationed at Belmont, Mo., and on Nov. 7, 1861, an attack was made on the town by General Grant. After a severe battle lasting the entire day he found that he was unable to hold his position and attempted to dislodge the concealed Federal force by a series of gallant charges. These proving of no avail, he was obliged to retreat. In the battle of Fort Donelson, he ranked second in command of the Confederate forces. He reached Fort Donelson Feb. 9, 1862, and on Feb. 14, 1862, the battle with the Federal gun boats was fought. On the 15th the situation was debated by General Floyd and his chiefs of brigade, and an immediate attack was decided upon against the advance of General Pillow. After the Confederate defeat he was relieved of his command and assigned to post duty until the close of the war. While on a visit to General Bragg at Murfreesboro, Tenn., he was given a temporary command in the battle of Murfreesboro, and took part in the famous charge of General Breckinridge. At the close of the war he returned to Tennessee and found his estates devastated. He engaged in farming, but in 1868 he formed a law partnership in Memphis, Tenn., with Isham G. Harris. His last years were spent in a vain effort to pay off his debts incurred during the war. He was married to Mary Martin of Columbia, Tenn. He died on the Mound Plantation, Phillips county, Ark., Oct. 8, 1878.
