21. | 8th Earl of Surrey John de Warenne (15.Joanna6, 9.Robert5, 8.Hugh4, 6.Robert3, 2.Agnes2, 1.Henry1) was born on 30 Jun 1286; died on 29 Jun 1347. Notes:
Warenne was only six months old when his father died, and was 7 years old when his mother died. He succeeded his grandfather as earl when he was 19.
He was one of the great nobles offended by the rise of the Edward II's favorite Piers Gaveston, and help secure Gaveston's 1308 banishment. The two were somewhat reconciled after Gaveston's return the next year, but in 1311 Warenne was one of the nobles who captured Gaveston. He was however unhappy about Gaveston's execution at the behest of the earl of Warwick, which pushed him back into the king's camp.
The baronial opposition was led by the king's cousin Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, and he and Warenne became bitter enemies. Private war erupted between the two, and over the new few years Warenne lost a good part of his estates to Lancaster.
Warenne was one of the four earls who captured the two Roger Mortimers, and in 1322 he was one of the nobles who condemned to death the earl of Lancaster.
Warenne and his brother-in-law Edmund Fitzalan, 9th Earl of Arundel were the last two earls to remain loyal to Edward II after the rise to power of Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer. After Arundel's execution he went over to the queen's side, urging Edward II's abdication in 1327.
He was the guardian of his cousin Edward Balliol, and after Balliol lay claim to the Scottish throne, accompanied him on his campaign in Lothian. Balliol created Warenne earl of Strathern, but this was in name only for the properties of the earldom were held by another claimant.
On May 25, 1306 Warenne married Jeanne of Bar, daughter of count Henry III of Bar and Eleanor, eldest daughter of king Edward I of England. The two were soon estranged and live apart, and had no children, though the marriage was never dissolved. Warenne instead took up with Matilda de Nerford, by whom he had several illegitimate children, and later with Isabella Holland, sister of Thomas Holand, later earl of Kent.
Warenne died in 1347 and is buried at the monastery of Lewes. He was succeeded as earl by his nephew Richard Fitzalan, who was also earl of Arundel.

Upon the death of his father in Venice, he was allowed to succeed him as Earl of Norfolk and Nottingham, but not as Duke of Norfolk. He also received his father's title of Earl Marshal, but on a strictly honorary basis, the military rank being held by Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland as the Marshal of England. He was betrothed to Constance Holland, daughter of John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter, then a child, but the marriage was never consummated.
A quarrel over precedence with Richard de Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick supposedly led to his estrangement from the court of Henry IV. Disaffected, he became involved with the latest rebellion of the Percies in the north, and raised an army with Richard le Scrope, Archbishop of York. Deserted by the Earl of Northumberland, Norfolk and Scrope were brought to book on Shipton Moor by a large royal army under John of Lancaster and the Earl of Westmorland. Seeking a parley, they were arrested as soon as they disbanded their followers. When Chief Justice Sir William Gascoigne refused to pass sentence upon them before they were tried by their peers, Henry had both summarily beheaded, without color of law, in York on June 8, 1405.

85. | 2nd Duke of Somerset Edmund Beaufort (53.Margaret10, 34.Alice9, 25.Richard8, 20.Alice7, 15.Joanna6, 9.Robert5, 8.Hugh4, 6.Robert3, 2.Agnes2, 1.Henry1) was born about 1406 in Worchestershire, England; died on 22 May 1455 in First Battle of St Albans.. Notes:
As a young man he became a commander in the English army in France. After his re-capture of Harfleur he was named a Knight of the Garter in 1436. After subsequent success he was created Earl of Dorset (1442) and the next year Marquess of Dorset. The year after that (1444) he succeeded his brother John as 4th Earl of Somerset in 1444. During the five year truce from 1444 to 1449, Somerset was Lieutenant of France. In 1448 he was created Duke of Somerset. Somerset found military success elusive after hostilities began again in 1449. By the summer of 1450 the bulk of the English possessions in northern France were in French hands. This loss lead to the fall of the king's chief minister, William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk. Somerset returned to England, where he took Suffolk's place as the king's counselor. A handsome and urbane courtier, his affair with King Henry V's widow, Queen, Katherine of France in 1427 created a political scandal. The focus of the war with the French now turned to Gascony, in the south of France. Here the English were no more successful, losing all by 1453. Soon afterwards the king went insane, Somerset's rival Richard, Duke of York was named Lord Protector, and Somerset was imprisoned in the Tower of London. His life was probably saved only by the king's recovery. Henry VI had Somerset released and returned to his position at court. The Duke of York was determined to depose Somerset by one means or another, and thus in May 1455 Richard, Duke of York raised an army and confronted Somerset and the king. Somerset was killed in the resulting engagement, known as the First Battle of St Albans. It was the beginning of the Wars of the Roses, which would go on to claim many of Somerset's sons and relatives. He was succeeded as duke by his son Henry. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At the beginning of the War of the Roses in 1450 he supported Richard, Duke of York, the leader of the Yorkist faction. However, in 1459, he swore allegiance to the Lancastrian Henry VI. He then quickly changed sides back to the Yorkists. This sort of treachery was by no means unusual during the Wars of the Roses.
In February 1461 he fought for the defeated Yorkists in the Second Battle of St Albans. In March 1461 (Richard, Duke of York now being dead) he was one of those who asked the Duke’s son the Earl of March to become Edward IV and later that month his intervention at the Battle of Towton was decisive. The battle took place in a snow storm between 80,000 men. Neither side could get an advantage until about midday Norfolk entered the battle on the Yorkist’s right flank. The Lancastrians then began to slowly fall back. As Earl Marshal Mowbray then officiated at Edward IV’s coronation.

Notes:
Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset (1438? - May 6, 1471) was an English nobleman and military commander during the Wars of the Roses.
He was the son of Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset, and became duke at the death of his brother Henry in 1464. (The dukedom was somewhat theoretical, depending on how one views the legitimacy of the forfeiture of the title by the 3rd duke during the reign of Edward IV, which was retracted by Henry VII long after Somerset's death.)
Edmund commanded the center of the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Barnet, (14 April 1471). Edmund also commanded the right of the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Tewkesbury, (4 May 1471) and was captured and then executed several days after the battle. His younger brother John Beaufort was slain during the Battle of Tewkesbury, making Edmund's death the end of the legitimate Beaufort line and, with the death shortly thereafter of Henry VI, left his cousin Margaret Beaufort and her son, Henry of Richmond, the future Henry VII, as the leading representatives of the House of Lancaster. Buried with his brother John Beaufort in Tewkesbury Abbey, in Gloucestershire.
