Of this noble Norman we have considerable information afforded us by Orderic, in consequence of his being one of the founders of the Abbey of Ouche, better known as that of St. Evroult, in which the historian was professed a monk by the venerable Abbot Mainer, in the eleventh year of his age, by the name of Vitalis (Vital), and in which monastery he lived fifty-six years.

From him we learn that Hugh de Grentmesnil was one of the sons of a Robert de Grentmesnil (now known as Grandmesnil, in the arrondissement of Lisieux) by Hawise de Giroie, which Robert was mortally wounded in the battle between Roger de Toeni and Roger de Beaumont, already mentioned, vol. i., pp. 19, 217.

He fought on the side of De Toeni, and being carried off the field, lingered for three weeks, and then died and was interred without the Church of St. Mary at Norrei, between Grandmesnil and Falaise. His issue by Hawise de Giroie was two sons, Robert and Hugh, between whom he divided his property.

Robert became a monk in the abbey he had assisted to re-edify. Hugh, who was "eminent for his skill and courage," was, through the machinations of Mabel de Montgomeri, banished by Duke William without any real cause of offence in 1058, but recalled from exile in 1063, and entrusted with the custody of the Castle of Neufmarché-en-Lions, from which the Duke, onn equally slight grounds, had expelled Geoffrey de Neufmarché, the rightfull heir; and nobly forgetful of past injustice, did the valiant Hugh justify the trust reposed in him, restoring in the course of a year the disturbed district to perfect tranquility. We next find him amongst the principal combatants in the great battle, but he surely cannot be the person described by Wace as "a vassal of Grandmesnil," who was in great peril during the action in consequence of his horse becoming masterless through the breaking of his bridle-rein in leaping over a bush. He was near falling, and the English perceiving his flight ran towards him with their long axes, but the horse taking fright, and wheeling suddenly round, bore his rider safely back into the ranks of the Normans. Hugh was certainly a vassal of the Duke of Normandy, but a baron of his reputation and power would scarcely be so described by Wace. Mons. Le Prévost, however,, appears by his note on the passage to consider it refers to Hugh himself, and Mr. Taylor follows him without comment. It may perhaps be argued that there is nothing in the incident itself to give it sufficient importance to be recorded by the poet unless the person endangered was some one of consequence. At all events, Hugh de Grentmesnil was certainly present at Senlac, and no doubt did his devoir, as he was wont to do; for in 1067 we find him one of the principal persons joined with William Fitz Osbern and Bishop Odo in the government of England, during the King's absence in Normandy, and besides the donation of one hundred manors in this country, sixty-five of which were in Leicestershire, he was appointed Viscount (i.e., sheriff) of that county and Governor of Hampshire.

He was one of the Norman nobles who interceded with the Conqueror in favor of Robert Court-heuse, and effected a temporary reconciliation. On the accession of Rufus he espoused the cause of the young duke; but like many others of his rank and country, weary of his vacillations, and disgusted by his general conduct, he ultimately took part against him.

In 1090 we find him in Normandy, in his old age, strenuously opposing the aggressions of the detestable Robert de Belesme, who had erected strongholds at Fourches and at La Conebe, on the river Orme, whence he made inroads on his neighbors, and harried all the country round.
Hugh de Grentmesnil and Richard de Courci, whose domains lay nearest to him, and most exposed to his depredations, were the first to take arms against him. Both these knights were now grey-headed, but their spirit was unbroken, and their intimate connection strengthened the bond of friendship between them, Richard de Courci, the son of Richard, having married Rohesia, daughter of Hugh. Matthew, Count of Beaumont-sur-l'Oise, brother-in-law of Hugh, William de Warren, second Earl of Surrey, with many other knights, hastened to their support, eager to exhibit their prowess in such a field. Theobald, son of Walter de Breteuil, called "the White Knight," because his steed and appointments were all white, and his brother-in-arms Guy, called "the Red Knight" for a similar reason, were slain in some of these encounters; but Robert de Belesme finding that he was unable to cope alone with his brave and resolute opponents, prevailed on the Duke of Normandy, by humble supplications and specious promises, to march to his assistance. In the month of January, 1091, the Duke accordingly laid siege to Courci-sur-Dive; but unwilling to come to extremities with his great nobles, took no measures for closely investing the place. De Belesme, however, used every means by force and stratagem to get possession of the castle. He caused a huge machine, called a belfry (berfradum), being a wooden tower containing a number of stages or floors, and moving on wheels, to be constructed and rolled up to the castle walls, filled with soldiers, who could leap from it on to the battlements, or fight hand to hand with the defenders; but the device proved in vain, for as often as he attempted an assault, a powerful force from Grentmesnil hastened to the rescue, and drew him off from the attack.

In one of these conflicts the garrison during a rally took prisoners William, son of Henry de Ferrers (who fought at Hastings), and William de Rupière, whose ransoms were a great assistance to the besieged; but, onn the other hand, the besiegers captured Ivo, one of the sons of Hugh de Grentmesnil and Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare, the latter of whom did not long survive the horrors of the dungeon to which De Belesme consigned him.

An oven had been built outside the fortifications, between the castle gate and De Belesme's belfry, and there the baker had to bake the bread for the use of the garrison, the siege having been begun so suddenly that the inhabitants of Courci had no time to construct one within the walls. The thickest of the fight was therefore often around this oven, for the men of Courci stood in arms to defend their bread while De Belesme's followers endeavored to carry it off. This led occasionally to a general engagement, in which there was much slaughter, without special advantage to either side; but in one of them, the besiegers having repulsed their assailants, set fire to the belfry, and succeeded in destroying it.

Hugh de Grentmesnil, who did not bear arms himself, on account of his advanced age, was much distressed by the long continuance of the siege, and in consequence sent the following message to the Duke of Normandy: - "I long served your father and grandfather, and suffered much in their service; I have also always been loyal to you. What have I done? In what have I offended you? How have I merited at your hands this hostility? I openly acknowledge you as my liege lord, and on that account will not appear in arms against you; but I offer you two hundred livres to withdraw when it may suit your pleasure for one single day, that I may fight Robert de Belesme!" Orderic has not acquainted us with the reply of Court-heuse to this manly appeal of the chivalric old warrior, who, as he mentions his service to the Duke's grandfather, could not at this period have been much under eighty.

At all events, neither the letter nor the mediation of Gerrard, Bishop of Séez, who took up his abode at the Convent of Dive during the siege, inn the hope of restoring peace in his diocese, had any effect upon either the Duke or Robert de Belesme; but the arrival of King William (Rufus) with a great fleet caused them to decamp with all haste and disband their forces, each man returning to his own home.

Three years afterwards, Hugh de Grentmesnil was again in England, and worn out with age and infirmity, finding his end approaching, assumed, in accordance with the common practice of the period, the habit of a monk, and expired six days after he had taken to his bed, 22nd of February, 1094, according to our present calculation, and presumably in the city of Leicester.

His body, preserved in salt and sewn up in the hide of an ox, was conveyed to Normandy by two monks of St. Evroult, named Bernard and David, and honorably buried by the Abbot Roger on the south side of the Chapter House, near the tomb of Abbot Mainer.

Arnold de Tillieul, his nephew, caused a marble slab to be placed over his grave, for which Orderic tells us he himself furnished the Latin epitaph in heroic verse, with which he obliges his readers; but as it is simply laudatory I will not inflict it on mine, observing only that it is a relief to feel that in this instance the praise appears to have been truly deserved, as I find nothing recorded of Hugh de Grentmesnil that does not redound to his credit.
In his youth we are told he married a very beautiful lady, Adeliza, daughter of Ivo, Count of Beaumont-sur-l'Oise, by his first wife Judith, with whom he had Brokesbourne, in Herefordshire, and three lordships in Warwickshire.

She died at Rouen seven years before her husband, and was buried in the Chapter House of St. Evroult, (A charter of her son Ivo indicates that she was buried at Bermondsey.) having had issue by him five sons and as many daughters - namely, Robert, William, Hugh, Ivo, and Aubrey; Adeline, Hawise, Rohais, Matilda, and Agnes - none of whom except Robert lived to an advanced age, and he, although thrice married, died without issue in 1136. Hugh died young. William, Ivo, and Aubrey forfeited their reputation for bravery by their dishonorable and ludicrous escape from Antioch, which obtained for them the name of ropedancers. With the exception of Hawise, who died unmarried, his daughters became the wives of noble knights: Adeline, of Roger d'Ivri, Rohais, of Robert de Courci, Matilda, of Hugh de Montpincon, and Agnes, of William de Say.

Warenne was only six months old when his father died, and was 7 years old when his mother died. He succeeded his grandfather as earl when he was 19.

He was one of the great nobles offended by the rise of the Edward II's favorite Piers Gaveston, and help secure Gaveston's 1308 banishment. The two were somewhat reconciled after Gaveston's return the next year, but in 1311 Warenne was one of the nobles who captured Gaveston. He was however unhappy about Gaveston's execution at the behest of the earl of Warwick, which pushed him back into the king's camp.

The baronial opposition was led by the king's cousin Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, and he and Warenne became bitter enemies. Private war erupted between the two, and over the new few years Warenne lost a good part of his estates to Lancaster.

Warenne was one of the four earls who captured the two Roger Mortimers, and in 1322 he was one of the nobles who condemned to death the earl of Lancaster.

Warenne and his brother-in-law Edmund Fitzalan, 9th Earl of Arundel were the last two earls to remain loyal to Edward II after the rise to power of Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer. After Arundel's execution he went over to the queen's side, urging Edward II's abdication in 1327.

He was the guardian of his cousin Edward Balliol, and after Balliol lay claim to the Scottish throne, accompanied him on his campaign in Lothian. Balliol created Warenne earl of Strathern, but this was in name only for the properties of the earldom were held by another claimant.

On May 25, 1306 Warenne married Jeanne of Bar, daughter of count Henry III of Bar and Eleanor, eldest daughter of king Edward I of England. The two were soon estranged and live apart, and had no children, though the marriage was never dissolved. Warenne instead took up with Matilda de Nerford, by whom he had several illegitimate children, and later with Isabella Holland, sister of Thomas Holand, later earl of Kent.

Warenne died in 1347 and is buried at the monastery of Lewes. He was succeeded as earl by his nephew Richard Fitzalan, who was also earl of Arundel.

This noble man, who, like his predecessors, was zealous in the cause of the barons, proceeded to London immediately after the defeat sustained by the insurrectionary lords at Northampton (48th Henry III) [1264], in order to rouse the citizens, which, having effected, he received the honor of knighthood from Montfort, Earl of Leicester, at the head of the army at Lewes; of which army, his lordship, with John Fitz-John and William de Montchensi, commanded the second brigade, and having mainly contributed to the victory in which the king and prince became prisoners, while the whole power of the realm fell into the hands of the victors, the earl procured a grant under the great seal of all the lands and possessions lying in England of John de Warren, Earl of Surrey, one of the most faithful adherents of the king, excepting the castles of Riegate and Lewes, to hold during the pleasure of the crown, and he soon after, with some of the principal barons, extorted from the captive monarch a commission authorizing Stephen, then bishop of Chichester, Simon Montford, Earl of Leicester, and himself, to nominate nine persons of "the most faithful, prudent, and most studious of the public weal," as well prelates as others, to manage all things according to the laws and customs of the realm until the consultations at Lewes should terminate. Being jealous, however, of the power of Leicester, the earl soon after abandoned the baronial cause and, having assisted in procuring the liberty of the king and prince, commanded the second brigade of the royal arm at the battle of Evesham, which restored the kingly power to its former luster. In reward of these eminent services he received a full pardon for himself and his brother Thomas of all prior treasons, and the custody of the castle of Bergavenny during the minority of Maud, wife of Humphrey de Bohun. His lordship veered again though in his allegiance and he does not appear to have been sincerely reconciled to the royal cause until 1270, in which year, demanding from Prince Edward repayment of the expenses he had incurred at the battle of Evesham, with livery of all the castles and lands which his ancestors had possessed and, those demands having been complied with, he thenceforward became a good and loyal subject of the crown. Upon the death of King Henry, the Earl of Hertford and Gloucester was one of the lords who met at the New Temple in London to proclaim Prince Edward, then in the Holy Land, successor to the crown, and so soon as the new monarch returned to England, his lordship was the first to entertain him and his whole retinue with great magnificence for several days at his castle of Tonebruge. In the 13th Edward I [1285], his lordship divorced his wife Alice, the French princess, and in consideration of her illustrious birth, granted for her support during her life, six extensive manors and parks, and he m. in 1289, Joan of Acre, dau. of King Edward I, upon which occasion he gave up the inheritance of his castles and manors, as well in England as in Wales , to his royal father-in-law, to dispose of as he might think proper; which manors, and c., were entailed by the king upon the earl's issue by the said Joane, and in default, upon her heirs and assigns, should she survive the lordship. By this lady he had issue, Gilbert, his successor, Alianore, Margaret, and Elizabeth. His lordship d. in 1295, and the Countess Joan surviving, m. a "plain esquire," called Ralph de Monthermer, clandestinely, without the king, her father's, knowledge, but to which alliance he was reconciled through the intercession of Anthony Beke, the celebrated bishop of Durham, and became eventually much attached to his now son-in-law. Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester (1243-1295), 8th earl of Gloucester and 9th earl of Clare, was born at Christchurch, Hampshire, on Sept. 2, 1243. He married Alice of Angouleme, niece of king Henry III, succeeded his father in July 1262, and joined the baronial party led by Simon de Montfort. With Simon, Gloucester was at the battle of Lewes in May 1264, when the king himself surrendered to him, and after this victory he was one of the three persons selected to nominate a council. Soon, however, he quarreled with Simon. Leaving London for his lands on the Welsh border he met Prince Edward, afterward king Edward I, at Ludlow, just after his escape from captivity; and contributed largely to the prince's victory at Evesham in August 1265. But this alliance was as transitory as the one with Leicester, Gloucester championed the barons who had surrendered at Kenilworth in November and December 1266, and after putting his demands before the king, secured possession of London (April 1267). The earl quickly made his peace with Henry III and with Prince Edward. Under Edward I he spent several years in fighting in Wales, or on the Welsh border; in 1289 when the barons were asked for a subsidy he replied on their behalf that they would grant nothing until they saw the king in person (nihi prius personaliter viderent in Anglia faciem regis), and in 291 he was fined and imprisoned on account of levying private war on Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford. Having divorced his wife Alice, he married in 1290 Edward's daughter Joan, or Johanna (d. 1307). The "Red Earl," as he is sometimes called, died at Monmouth on Dec. 7, 1295, leaving, in addition to three daughters, a son, Gilbert, earl of Gloucester, killed at Bannockburn. Ralph de Nevill, 2nd baron, was summoned to parliament from 20 November, 1331, to 20 January, 1336. This nobleman, in the time of his father, was retained by indenture to serve the Lord Henry de Percy for life, in peace and war, against all men except the king, with twenty men-at-arms, whereof five to be knights receiving Â100 sterling per annum. Theeeeee disputee with ttthhhe prior of Durham, regarding the presentation of the stag was revived and finally set to rest in the abandonment of his claim by this Lord Nevill. The matter is thus detailed by Dugdale: "In this year likewise, doing his fealty to William, prior of Durham, upon Lammas Day, for the manor of Raby, he told him, 'that he would offer the stag as his ancestors had done; saving that, whereas his father required that the prior's servants should be set aside at that time and his own serve in their stead, he would be content that his should attend together with those of the prior's; and, whereas his father insisted that his servants should only be admitted at dinner, he stood upon it that his should be there entertained the whole day and likewise the morrow at breakfast.' Whereupon the prior made answer, 'that none of his ancestors were ever so admitted and that he would rather quit the stag than suffer any new custom to the prejudice of their church.' But, to this Ralph replied, 'that he would perform the whole service or none and put the trial of his right upon the country.' The prior, therefore, knowing him to be so powerful and that the country could not displease him, declined the offer; howbeit, at length, to gain his favour, in regard he had no small interest at court and might do him a kindness or a displeasure, was content for that one time he should perform it as he pleased so that it might not be drawn into example afterwards; and, to the purpose proposed, that indentures should be made betwixt them. Whereupon the Lord Nevill brought but few with him and those more for the honour of the prior than a burthen; and so, shortly after dinner, took his leave, but left one of his servants to lodge there all night and to take his breakfast there on the next day; 'protesting that, being both a son and tenant to the church, he would not be burthensome to it, in respect it would be no advantage to himself but might much damnifie him if he should bring with him as great a train as he would, saying, 'what doth a breakfast signify to me? nothing. And likewise, that if the prior would shew that he had no right to what he so claimed, he would freely recede therefrom; and if he had a right, he would accept a composition for it rather than be burthensome to the convent; but if they should put him to get his right by law, then he would not abate anything thereof.' Whereupon inquiry being made amongst the eldest monks of the house, they affirmed that, being of eight years standing when his father was before repulsed, they had often seen the stag offered, and that he never staid dinner but when the prior invited him, and some ancient men of the country testified as much; also, that so soon as the stag was brought, they carried him to the kitchen, and those who brought him were taken into the hall to breakfast, as they that bring their rents used to be.

"Moreover, when it happened any of the Lords Nevill to be desired to stay dinner with the prior, his cook was admitted into the kitchen to prepare a dish for him; so, likewise, another servant in the cellar to choose his drink; and in like manner, some other at the gate who knew his servants and followers, merely to let them in and keep out others who, under pretence of being servants, might then intrude. But this was only done by the prior, as out of courtesy and respect, and not at all out of right."

In the 7th Edward III [1314], Lord Nevill was one of the commissioners sent into Scotland, there to see that the covenants between Edward de Baliol, King of Scots, and his royal master were ratified by the parliament of that kingdom; and the next year he was joined with Henry de Percy in the wardenship of the marches of Northumberland, Cumberland, and Westmoreland. He had, subsequently, other high and confidential employments and was constantly engaged in the wars of Scotland and France. His lordship m. Alice, dau. of of Sir Hugh de Audley, and by her (who m 2ndly, Ralph, Lord Greystock, and d. 1374) had issue, John, Thomas, Robert, Alexander, Ralph, Euphemia, Catherine, Margaret, Isabel, and Eleanor.

He d. in 1367 and was buried in the church of Durham, on the south side thereof, being the first layman that had sepulture there, which favour he obtained from the prior and convent for a vestment of red velvet, richly embroidered with gold silk, great pearls, and images of the saints standing in tabernacles by him given to St Cuthbert. His body being brought in a chariot drawn by seven horses to the boundary of the churchyard and thence conveyed upon the shoulders of knights into the middle of the church where the abbot of St. Mary's in York (by reason of the bishop's absence and impotency of the dean), performed the office of the dead, and celebrated the morrow mass, at which were offered eight horses, viz., four for the war, with four men armed, and all their harness and habiliments; and four others for peace; as also three cloths of gold, of blue colour, interwoven with flowers. Four of those horses were redeemed after the funeral by Sir John, his son and heir, for 100 marks. His lordship was s. by his eldest son, Sir John de Nevill. William de Braose, in the 22nd of Edward I [1293], had summons to attend the king with other great men to advise regarding the important affairs of the realm. And about the beginning of the ensuing September, he was one of those who embarked at Portsmouth with horse and arms in the king's service for Gascony. In the 28th and 29th of the same reign,he was in the wars of Scotland, and in the latter year he had summons to parliament as a baron. In the 32nd [1304], he was again in the Scottish wars and then enjoyed so much favour that the king not only confirmed to him and his heirs the grant of Gower Land, made by King john to his ancestor, but granted that he and they should thenceforth enjoy all regal jurisdiction, liberties, and privileges there in as ample a manner as Gilder de Clare, son of Richard de Clare, sometimes Earl of Gloucester, had in all his lands of Glamorgan. For several years afterwards, his lordship appears to have been constantly engaged upon the same theatre of war and was always eminently distinguished. In the 14th Edward II [1321], according to Thomas of Walsingham, being "a person who had a large patrimony but a great unthrift," his lordship put up for sale his noble territory of Gower Land, and absolutely sold it under the king's license to the Earl of Hereford; but its contiguity to the lands of the younger Spencer (who was then high in royal favour, and the king's chamberlain), attracting the attention of that minion, he forcibly possessed himself of the estate and thus gave rise to the insurrection headed by Thomas Plantagenet, Earl of Lancaster. Lord Braose m. Aliva, dau. of Thomas de Moulton, and had issue, Aliva, m. 1st, to John de Mowbray, and 2ndly, to Sir Richard de Pershall, and Joan, m. to John* de Bohun, of Midhurst. His lordship, who had regular summons to parliament to 18 September, 1322, d. in that year, when the Barony of Braose, of Gower, fell into abeyance between his daus. and co-heirs, and it so continues with their representatives. Elizabeth de Burgh, Lady of Clare, (c. 1294-1360), foundress of Clare College, Cambridge, was the youngest daughter of Gilbert Clare Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (d. 1295) by his second marriage to Edward I's daughter Joan of Acre (1271-1307). She was married first to John Burgh (d. 1313), heir to the earldom of Ulster, to whom she bore her only son William. Following the childless death of her only brother Gilbert at Bannockburn in 1314, she became a great heiress and was abducted in 1316, probably with her consent, by Theobald Verdon, who died later the same year and to whom she bore a posthumous daughter Isabel. A daughter Elizabeth was born by her third marriage to Roger Damory, who died in 1321. Still only in her mid-twenties, with dowers from all three husbands and with an inheritance worth at least 2,000 a year, she was an obvious target both for marriage and for molestation by the Despensers, who defrauded her of her lordship of Usk. This was recovered after their overthrow and she did not marry again, taking a vow of chastity by 1344. At her death her inheritance descended to her granddaughter Elizabeth, wife of Edward III's son Lionel, Duke of Clarence, and thence passed to the Mortimers and house of York.

Elizabeth's widowhood is illuminated by the finest set of household accounts still surviving. These reveal that she lived in stately splendour at Clare in Suffolk, where she received a stream of visitors, including her kinsfolk Edward III and Queen Philippa. 250 people received her livery in 1343, many of them members of her household, and at least 3,000 a year and sometimes more was spent by her wardrobe and household. This was not because Elizabeth was extravagant; she ran her household and estates efficiently, obtained value for her money, and took a strong line with poachers. That 93 esquires took her livery indicates her role as a great local aristocrat, particularly in East Anglia, which also emerges from her religious patronage.

As an heiress, Elizabeth held estates in her own right, not for life, and could thus give generously to the Church without first saving up wealth, as her friend Mary of St Pol had to do. Already before her husbands' deaths, she had vowed to go on pilgrimage to Santiago and the Holy Land, a promise she was unable to fulfill, and from the early 1330s was giving property to Ely cathedral priory, Tremenhall and Anglesey priories, and West Dereham Abbey. Her attention was attracted by 1336 to the notoriously under-financed University Hall at Cambridge, which she was persuaded to take over as Clare Hall, to endow (1346), and for which she devised statutes in 1359. All this involved dealing tactfully but firmly with the university and unsatisfactory fellows. Clare College was the first college deliberately planned to include undergraduates. While Elizabeth's example may have prompted Mary of St Pol to found Pembroke College, certainly it was Mary who interested Elizabeth in the Franciscans. In 1343 Elizabeth gave a church to Mary's abbey of Franciscan nuns (Minoresses) at Denney, in 1347 she founded a Franciscan friary at the pilgrimage centre of Walsingham priory, from 1355 (like Mary) she was authorised to stay overnight in Minoress houses, and in 1360 her will asked for burial at the Aldgate house of Minoresses. Her influence helps explain the foundation of the final English house of Minoresses at Bruisyard by her granddaughter and her husband Clarence with nuns from Denney. John de Mowbray, 2nd baron, summoned to parliament from 26 August, 1307, to 5 August, 1320. This nobleman, during his minority, was actively engaged in the Scottish wars of King Edward I, and had livery of all his lands before he attained majority in consideration of those services. In the 6th Edward II [1313], being then sheriff of Yorkshire and governor of the city of York, he had command from the king to seize upon Henry de Percy, then a great baron in the north, in consequence of that nobleman suffering Piers de Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall, to escape from Scarborough Castle in which he had undertaken to keep him in safety. The next year Lord Mowbray was in another expedition into Scotland, and he was then constituted one of the wardens of the marches towards that kingdom. In the 11th of the same reign [1318], he was made governor of Malton and Scarborough Castles, in Yorkshire, and the following year he was once more in Scotland, invested with authority to receive into protection all who should submit to King Edward, but afterwards taking part in the insurrection of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, he was made prisoner with that nobleman and others at the battle of Boroughbridge and immediately hanged at York, anno 1321, when his lands were seized by the crown and Aliva, his widow, with her son, imprisoned in the Tower of London. Roger Clifford, 2nd Lord of Skipton

He was involved in a rebellion against King Edward I's favourite Huge Lord de Despencer, and ultimately against the King him self. The rebel forces were brought to battle by the King's forces in Boroughbridge in March 1322 at which Roger Clifford received severe wounds. Forced to surrender, he was condemned to death and held captive in York. Reprieved, probably because of his wounds, he survived until 1326. His estates were forfeited, including Skipton castle. They were restored to Robert, 3rd Lord of Skipton in 1327.

The Battle of Boroughbridge was a small but important battle in the conflicts between Edward II of England and his rebellious barons. The battle took place near at important bridge across the Wye called Boroughbridge, northwest of York.

Early in 1322, King Edward took forces north in England to subdue his cousin Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. Lancaster was pushed further north, where he may have been hoping to join up with forces from Scotland. However on March 16, he found his way across the river Wye barred by forces of Sir Andrew Harclay. Sir Andrew used the infantry tactics which were later to prove so effective against the French at Crecy, and the rebels were defeated.

Of the rebel leaders, Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford, was killed, and the rest captured. The prisoners were later convicted of treason and executed.

Edmund was a supporter of his first cousin once removed, Henry Bolingbroke, despite having a better claim to the throne of England (Edmund's grandfather was Edward III's third son, while Bolingbroke's father (John of Gaunt) was Edward's fourth son). Edmund fought for Bolingbroke until captured by the Welsh rebel, Owain Glyndwr in battle.

When Henry proved slow to ransom Mortimer, Glyndwr won his allegiance. Mortimer married Glyndwr's daughter Katherine (Catrin) in 1402, and they are believed to have had at least four children.

Glyndwr and Mortimer plotted with Henry Percy, "Hotspur," to depose Henry IV and divide the kingdom of England and Wales in three. However, at some time during the siege of Owen's stronghold of Harlech by Henry, Prince of Wales, Mortimer died, possibly of plague.
