The Cumans (or Kunok) were originally a Turkic tribe, with whom the Magyars fought during and after the disappearance of the Petcheneg (Besenyö) tribes, on Hungary's Transylvanian border after their conquesttt of the Carpathian basin. They were invited into Hungary to resettle the country after the Mongol raids of 1241-1242 following the battle of Muhi, in return for military service and a number of other privileges, they were granted a large tract of land between the Danube (Duna) and Theiss (Tisza) rivers, today's Nagy- and Kiskunság..
