Sir John Nevill, 3rd Baron Nevill of Raby, summoned to Parliament from 1368-1388. Knight of the Garter. This nobleman was carried by his father to witness the Battle of Durham, being then scarcely five years old. He received the honour of Knighthood when in arms before the barriers of Paris. In 44th of Edward III (1370) he was again in wars with France and then constituted Admiral of the King's Fleet from the mouth of the Thames northward. During the remainder of Edward III's reign he was constantly in active service either in Scotland or France. In 2nd of Richard II (1379) he was constituted Lieutenant of Aquitiane in France and Seneschal of Bordeaux. His lordship was a Knight of the Garter. He married Maud, daughter of Henry, Lord Percy. He married 2nd Elizabeth, daughter of William, Lord Latimer. He died at New Castle October 17, 1388, and was buried in the south side of the nave of Durham Cathedral. He was succeeded by his son, Ralph .

Percy however followed his father in swearing allegiance to the House of Lancaster. On December 30, 1460, Percy is known to have fought on the Lancastrian side at the Battle of Wakefield. He commanded the Lancastrian van at the Battle of Towton, where he was killed.

Edward IV, son of Richard, Duke of York and Cicely Neville, was born in 1442. He married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464, the widow of the Lancastrian Sir John Grey, who bore him ten children. He also entertained many mistresses and had at least one illegitimate son.

Edward came to the throne through the efforts of his father; as Henry VI became increasingly less effective, Richard pressed the claim of the York family but was killed before he could ascend the throne: Edward deposed his cousin Henry after defeating the Lancastrians at Mortimer's Cross in 1461. Richard Neville, the Kingmaker, Earl of Warwick proclaimed Henry king once again in 1470, but less than a year elapsed when Edward reclaimed the crown and had Henry executed in 1471.

The rest of his reign was fairly uneventful. He revived the English claim to the French throne and invaded the weakened France, extorting a non-aggression treaty from Louis XI in 1475 which amounted to a lump payment of 75,000 crowns, and an annuity of 20,000. Edward had his brother, George, Duke of Clarendon, judicially murdered in 1478 on a charge of treason. His marriage to Elizabeth Woodville vexed his councilors, and he allowed many of the great nobles (such as his brother Richard) to build uncharacteristically large power bases in the provinces in return for their support.

Edward died suddenly in 1483, leaving behind two sons aged twelve and nine, five daughters, and a troubled legacy.

At the beginning of the War of the Roses in 1450 he supported Richard, Duke of York, the leader of the Yorkist faction. However, in 1459, he swore allegiance to the Lancastrian Henry VI. He then quickly changed sides back to the Yorkists. This sort of treachery was by no means unusual during the Wars of the Roses.

In February 1461 he fought for the defeated Yorkists in the Second Battle of St Albans. In March 1461 (Richard, Duke of York now being dead) he was one of those who asked the Duke’s son the Earl of March to become Edward IV and later that month his intervention at the Battle of Towton was decisive. The battle took place in a snow storm between 80,000 men. Neither side could get an advantage until about midday Norfolk entered the battle on the Yorkist’s right flank. The Lancastrians then began to slowly fall back. As Earl Marshal Mowbray then officiated at Edward IV’s coronation.

In 1465, John Neville was named Earl of Northumberland in his place. Percy eventually swore fealty to Edward IV and was released in 1469. He petitioned for the return of his paternal titles and estates to him. He gained support by Edward IV himself. John Neville had to quit his title and was instead named Marquess of Montagu in 1470. However the restoration of said title to Percy was delayed by the Parliament of England until 1473.

For the following twelve years, Percy held many of the important government posts in Northern England which were traditional in his family. He commanded the Yorkist reserve at the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485. Percy never committed his forces to the battle. His inactivity played an important part in the defeat and death of Richard III. Historians suspect him of treason in favour of victor Henry VII of England. Although an alternative theory exists, that his forces, placed behind those of King Richards, were in no position to take part in the battle before Richard was killed.

If the first theory is true, then Henry himself was either unaware or not appreciative of his treasonous intentions. Percy was arrested along with Ralph Neville, 3rd Earl of Westmorland and Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk. He was imprisoned for several months but swore allegiance to the new King. Henry VII released him on terms of good behavior. Percy was allowed to retain his titles and lands as well as returning to his old posts.

In April, 1489, Percy held temporary residence in his estates of Yorkshire. Henry VII had recently allied himself to Anne of Brittany against Charles VIII of France. Taxes rose to finance the military action. Sir John Egremont of Yorkshire led a riot in protestation of the high taxation. Percy was targeted by the rioters and killed on 28 April.

Yorkshire was formerly a stronghold of support of Richard III. Percy was presumably killed in vengeance for Richard.

He played a major role in Richard III of England's rise and fall. He is also one of the primary suspects in the disappearance (and presumed murder) of the Princes in the Tower. Buckingham was related to the royal family of England so many different ways that he was his own cousin many times over, but his connections were all through daughters of younger sons. From - Berry's 'Victorian History of Essex' Three days before Christmas 1562 Francis Chaunsey of Shenfield, gentleman, took conies with ferrets and pursenets from the lands called Osgoods there belonging to Thomas Parker gentleman, and was fined 20d. In 1565 fifteen men, mostly of Great Warley, were charged with 'cony stealing' and bound over to appear by mutual recognizances, and Matthew Perry, a gentleman of that parish, was separately charged with shooting both a crossbow and a handgun. Two years later a Margaretting man with his greyhounds broke into Christopher Harry's grounds at 'Shenfield' (now Killigrews) and chased his conies with intent to kill them.

In 1564 the Chelmsford Hundred* jurors present that the way between the maple against 'Chenfeldes and Stistedes' lieth between the parishes of Writtle and Widford and is not mended, neither are the ditches scoured nor the wood felled off. Next year and again in 1566 it is still 'very noisome' between a farm called 'Systydes and the mill hill in the parishes of Writtle, Widford and Margaretting.' Shenfields is the moated Tudor house, now called Killigrews, a quarter of a mile south-east of the Great Essex Road. Stisteds lay close to it on the opposite side; it was pulled down when Hylands Park was enlarged but its ancient kitchen-garden wall still stands by the now closed London gate off the park. *Hundred: A subdivision of a county or shire, having its own court.

He was 17 months old when his father (James IV) was killed. His mother acted as regent until her marriage in 1514 to Archibald, 6th earl of Angus. In 1525, during the continued struggle for control of the country, James was taken prisoner by his stepfather. Three years later the King escaped and assumed control of Scotland. His uncle, Henry VIII, King of England, tried to induce James to repudiate the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, but James refused, and relations between England and Scotland became strained; in 1542 war broke out.
