She was in Pontotoc, Miss. at the outbreak of the war, but her bother Clay went for her, and they finally reached their home on Henry Co., after a dangerous and exciting trip across the country. Later she spent a lot of time nursing the sick and wounded in Richmond. She taught school in Va. and NC for several years.
