Mary's handwritten autobiography (found by Sandra Newton Mille Lassen, 1976, in a box of 1946 cancelled checks in Veranda Hse Apts.): "My mother (i.e., Harriet) moved to Hampden-Sidney when I was quite young and ran a boarding house for college boys and taught music lessons...When my mothers parents died we moved to the old Venable home "Scott Green" where we lived until I was married in 1894....my mothers hands were more than full - a large family - an invalid husband, boarders and a music class."
Transcription of notes of Harriet Ann Venable (undated) from papers of her namesake, Harriet Venable Miller:
"Just before the Civil war began Henry Watkins Edmunds joined the military company and was elected corporal. First fight got into he was wounded, captured and paroled. Came home and went to courting. Got engaged to Harriet Ann Venable. He was young and strong and vigorous and thought he could take care of a wife all right, but a short time after this engagement he was exchanged and volunteered the second time and joined a cavalry co. 3rd VA Cavalry, Fitz. Lee's Brigade, J.E.B. Stuart's division, and was severely wounded at Kelly's Ford, Culpepper Co., VA, and returned home. His father sent for Dr. Mettener, a noted surgeon who when he saw him, said it would take several years for his wound to heal (it took six years to heal). He also said that unless he had pneumonia or pleurisy his wound would not shorten his days, but that he would always be short-winded and never able to do continuous hard work.
He then wrote to his sweetheart, Hattie Venable and told her what the doctor had said and telling her as he could not ask her to sacrifice her life to the helpless cripple that he was, felt that he would not be able to take care of her, that he would make no complaint if she should cancel the engagement between them. She replied at once that the engagement should not be broken and if he could not take care of her she could and would take care of him, which she did for 59 years.
In 1914 we celebrated our Golden Wedding and John D. Rockefellow (sic) celebrated his the same day and I feel that I have left my children with a better legacy by having such a mother and her example and precept than if I had had all of John D.'s wealth to leave them."

Source: History Of Union County, KY 1886 pages 491 & 492
Landon Cabell Flournoy, Attorney-at-law, of Morganfield, is the son of William Cabell and Marha [Martha] Watkins (Venable) Flournoy. His father, a lawyer of Prince Edward County, Va., was born at Union Hill, Nelson County, Va., in 1808, married in Prince Edward County, Va., in 1834, and died there in March, 1861. Mr. Flournoy's mother was born in Prince Edward County, Va., in 1816, and is still living. His grandfather, John James Flournoy, of Prince Edward County, married Ann Cabell, of Union Hill, Nelson County. His maternal grandparents, William and Fannie (Nance) Venable, were both natives of Prince Edward County, Va. Mr. Flournoy's ancestry runs back into the Huguenot refugees, who fled from France to this country early in the seventeenth century.
Our subject was born in Farmsville [Farmville], Prince Edward County, Va., March 4, 1850. He received some eight years training in the "old field schools" of Virginia, and then went to Hampden Sidney College, where he completed a four-years' course. On January 15, 1873, he came to Union County. He taught schools in the terms of 1873-4 and 1874-5; he had, previous to this, taught in Boone County, and he has always been a most acceptable teacher, doing good work, and possessing rare skill as an instructor; he held the office of School Commissioner for some time, and made an efficient public servant in that capacity. In the spring of 1875, he began reading law, and in October, 1875, was admitted to practice in the Union County bar. Since then he has been employed in a general civil and criminal practice in this county.
On February 27, 1877, he was married to Mattie Givens, in Uniontown. She was the daughter of Thomas R. and Elizabeth Martin Givens; born December 7, 1857, and died in Leesburg, Florida, on May 9, 1884. Bessie Venable, Sallie Wright and Martha Watkins are the children born of this union.
Mr. Flournoy has 202 acres of land east of Morganfield, all of which is cultivated and rented. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for ten years, and is now a deacon in that denomination; he is a Mason, and holds the office of genial gentleman, possessed of a large fund of anecdote and with all the qualities that go to make a popular man, and he will undoubtedly rise high in his profession.
Landon married Susan Cabell Cobbs on 3 May 1888 in Sutherlin, Halifax County, Virginia, USA. Susan (daughter of John F. Cobbs and Mary P. Flournoy) was born on 5 Nov 1864 in Danville, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Brigadier General William L. Cabell, known as "Old Tige", was born in Danville, Virginia on January 1, 1827, the third child of Gen. Benjamin W. S. and Sarah Eppes Cabell, who lived to see seven sons and two daughters grown. (Six sons held prominent positions in the Confederate army. The other, Dr. Powhatan Cabell, died from the effect of an arrow wound received in Florida just before the Civil War began.) General Cabell was graduated at the military academy at West Point in 1850, entered the United States army as second lieutenant, and was assigned to the Seventh U.S. Infantry. In June, 1855, he was promoted to first lieutenant and made regimental quartermaster of that regiment. In March, 1858, he was promoted to captain in the quartermaster department and assigned to the staff of Gen. Persifer F. Smith, then in command of the Utah expedition. When the war became inevitable, Captain Cabell repaired to Fort Smith, Arkansas, and from there went to Little Rock and offered his services to the governor of the State. On receipt of a telegram from President Davis he went to Montgomery, Alabama, then the Confederate capital, where he found the acceptance of his resignation from the United States army, signed by President Lincoln. He was at once commissioned major, Confederate States Army, and under orders from President Davis left on April 21st for Richmond to organize the quartermaster, commissary and ordnance departments. Later he was sent to Manassas to report to General Beauregard as chief quartermaster of the Confederate Army of the Potomac, in which position he assisted in designing what became the Army of Northern Virginia battle flag, now commonly recognized as the Confederate battle flag. After Gen. Joseph E. Johnston assumed command, Major Cabell served on his staff until January 15, 1862, when he was ordered to report to Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, by whom he was assigned to General van Dorn, with headquarters then at Jacksonport, Ark. He was next promoted to the rank of brigadier general and put in command of all the troops on White River in Arkansas, where he held the enemy in check until after the battle of Elkhorn Tavern, March 7th and 8th, 1862. After that battle the army was transferred to the east side of the Mississippi. The removal of this army, which included Price's Missouri and McCulloch's Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas troops, and his own command, devolved on General Cabell, and was performed within a single week from points along White River. van Dorn's army proceeded, after reaching Memphis, to Corinth, and General Cabell was assigned to command a Texas brigade with an Arkansas regiment attached. He led this brigade in several engagements around Corinth, and commanded the rear of the army on the retreat from Corinth to Tupelo. After Bragg had moved into Tennessee, Cabell was transferred to an Arkansas brigade, which he commanded in the battles of Iuka and Saltillo in September, at Corinth on October 2 and 3, 1862, and at Hatchie Bridge on the 4th. He was wounded leading the charge of his brigade on the breastworks at Corinth and also at Hatchie Bridge, which disabled him for duty in the field. What was left of his command was temporarily assigned to the First Missouri brigade under General Bowen, and he was ordered to the Trans-Mississippi department to recover from his wounds and inspect the staff departments of that army. When his strength was sufficiently restored he was, in February, 1863, put in command of northwest Arkansas, with instructions to augment his forces by recruits from every part of the State. In this he was very successful, organizing one of the largest cavalry brigades west of the Mississippi, which he thereafter commanded in more than twenty battles. He took a prominent part in the engagements at Poison Spring and Marks' Mills, in April, 1864, commanding two brigades of Fagan's division. In his report of the campaign ending at Jenkins' Ferry, General Marmaduke wrote that, "To speak of the quick perception and foresight or the reckless bravery of Shelby, the élan and chivalrous bearing of Cabell, inspiring all who looked upon him, or the perseverance, untiring energy and steady courage of Greene, would be telling a twice-told tale." During the 1864 raid into Missouri under General Price General Cabell was captured in battle near the Little Osage river, October 25, 1864, and was taken to Johnson's island, Lake Erie, and later to Fort Warren, near Boston, and held until August 28, 1865.
After his release from the POW camp in August, 1865, General Cabell returned to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He moved to Dallas, Texas in 1872, and served four terms as mayor of that city. He was a U.S. Marshal from 1885 until 1889, and then became vice-president of what became a part of the Southern Pacific Railroad system. From 1893 until 1907, General Cabell was one of the supervisors of the Louisiana State Lottery and of its successor, the Honduras National Lottery. He was appointed as a lieutenant-general of the United Confederate Veterans, commanding the Trans-Mississippi department, and became an honorary commander-in-chief of the UCV. General Cabell died in Dallas on February 22, 1911, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery there.

354. | III Carter Henry Harrison (147.Carter6, 70.Ann5, 36.Joseph4, 12.Elizabeth3, 2.Mary2, 1.Nathaniel1) was born on 15 Feb 1825 in Elk Hill, Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky, USA; died on 28 Oct 1893 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA; was buried in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. Notes:
B.A., Yale, 1845. Member, 44th and 45th Congresses, 1875-79. Five times
elected mayor of Chicago.
Carter Harrison came to Chicago because he saw it as a land of opportunity. As mayor, he believed that Chicagoans' two major desires were to make money and to spend it. During his administrations, Chicago's vice districts blossomed and special maps were printed to enable tourists to find their way from brothel to brothel. The name of one Chicago saloon-keeper of the time entered the English language as a term for a strong or laced drink intended to render unconsciousness: Mickey Finn. The night of the Haymarket Riot, Harrison walked unmolested through the crowd of anarchists and advised the police to leave the demonstrators alone. The riot was sparked by a policeman who disobeyed Harrison's directive. Harrison was re-elected in time for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. His desire was to show the world the true Chicago and he appointed 1st Ward Alderman "Bathhouse" John Coughlin to sit on the reception committee. On October 28, 1893, three days before the close of the Exposition, Harrison was murdered in his home by Eugene Patrick Prendergast, a disgruntled office seeker. Prendergast was hanged on July 13, 1894. Harrison was Chicago's first five-time elected mayor. Eventually his son, Carter Harrison, Jr. would be elected mayor five times.
Carter married Sophonisba Grayson Preston on 12 Apr 1855 in Henderson, Kentucky, USA. Sophonisba was born on 27 Oct 1833 in Henderson County, Kentucky, USA; died in Sep 1876 in Germany; was buried in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

James Branch Cabell
1879-1958
Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial Jurgen (1919), one of several ironic fantasies he wrote that took place in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (Pwa-tem). Jurgen, laced with erotic overtones, was considered pornographic by some and a trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame. Throughout the 1920s, Cabell was highly regarded by his literary peers -- H.L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, and others praised his works. His medieval romanticism and fantasy were in fact thinly disguised commentary on the manners of those times.
Cabell was born in Richmond, Virginia on April 14, 1879 at 101 E. Franklin St., the present site of the Richmond Public Library. His father was Robert Gamble Cabell, II (1847-1922), a physician; his mother Anne Harris (1859-1915), daughter of Col. and Mrs James R. Branch. Cabell's great grandfather was William H. Cabell, governor of Virginia from 1805-1808. Cabell had two brothers, Robert Gamble Cabell, III (1881-1968) and John Lottier Cabell (1883-1946). His parents separated and were later divorced in 1907.
After attending William and Mary College (1893-1898), where he taught courses in French and Greek while an undergraduate, Cabell worked briefly at the Richmond Times as a copy-holder. Beginning in 1899 he lived for two years in New York City, working for the New York Herald as a social reporter, serving for a time in the paper's Harlem office. In 1901 he returned to Richmond and worked several months on the staff of the Richmond News. During the next ten years he performed genealogical research and wrote many short stories and articles, contributing to national magazines such as Harper's Monthly Magazine and the Saturday Evening Post.
In 1911, he was employed as a bookkeeper in the office of his uncle's (James R. Branch) coal mine in West Virginia. He returned to Richmond in 1913 and married Rebecca Priscilla Bradley Shepherd (1874-1949), a widow with five children by her previous marriage. They had one son, Ballard Hartwell Cabell (1915-1980).
Although he had written for newspapers, Cabell's first work to be published in a journal was a college paper entitled The Comedies of William Congreve which appeared in the April 1901 edition of International. His first book, The Eagle's Shadow, was published in the autumn of 1904 after it appeared serially in the Saturday Evening Post during that summer. Whether it was his highly mannered prose or the fact that he was writing ironic romances, his work was slow to draw critical attention. By 1918 he had published 10 major works and began to attract critical admirers. In an article published that year in the New York Evening Mail, H.L. Mencken described Cabell as "the only first-rate literary craftsman that the whole South can show." Cabell's stature and fame as an author grew immensely with the 1919 publication of Jurgen.
On January 14, 1920, the New York State Society for the Prevention of Vice charged Cabell's publishing editor, Guy Holt, with violation of the anti-obscenity provisions of the New York State Penal Code by publishing Jurgen. The controversy over the charges and the attempt at censorship brought the shy Cabell much notoriety. Writers defended the artistry of Jurgen and Cabell's right to publish it. College students and others read it because it had been banned.
The obscenity trial over Jurgen began October 16, 1922, and ended three days later with an acquittal of all charges. Judge Charles C. Nott, the presiding judge, wrote in his decision that "...the most that can be said against the book is that certain passages therein may be considered suggestive in a veiled and subtle way of immorality, but such suggestions are delicately conveyed" and that because of Cabell's writing style "...it is doubtful if the book could be read or understood at all by more than a very limited number of readers."
Throughout the 1920s, he continued to publish in the style of Jurgen, a combination of satire, symbolism and fantasy, set in a mythical medieval French provence, called Poictesme (Pwa-tem). The name was a compound of two provinces located in the south of France, Poitiers and Angouleme. In these books, Cabell blended an assortment of myths and legends laced with puns, anagrams, and allegories. These works eventually became part of an eighteen-volume collection entitled The Biography of the Life of Manuel. The last volume was published in 1930.
Cabell had become well regarded by prominent writers of the period and maintained an extensive correspondence with a wide circle of literary artists and friends, including Mencken, Joseph Hergesheimer, Burton Rascoe, Theodore Dreiser, Sinclair Lewis, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Carl van Vechten, and fellow Richmonder and close friend Ellen Glasgow. He had known Glasgow since at least his days at William and Mary College (as children they had lived only blocks away from each other in Richmond). He also served as editor of the Virginia War History Commission (1919-1926) and later joined Dreiser, Eugene O'Neil and others on the editorial board of the American Spectator (1932-1935). In 1937, Cabell was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
While the controversy over Jurgen insured Cabell an audience throughout most of the 1920s, interest in his books dropped sharply in the New Deal era of the 1930s and continued to decline. His work was considered outdated, his writing too stylized.
In 1932, in an attempt to break away from his past, he began to publish work under the name Branch Cabell. During the next three decades he wrote and published nearly twenty more books. They were grouped in a series of trilogies. He returned as James Branch Cabell in 1947 with the publication of Let Me Lie. It was the first installment of his fifth and last trilogy, consisting largely of semi-autobiographical essays, filled with remembrances of Virginia. Cabell continued to live and work in Richmond, residing at 3201 Monument Avenue. He and his family began to spend most of their winter months in St. Augustine, Florida after Cabell began to suffer from attacks of pneumonia in 1935. During their stay in Florida in 1949, his wife died of heart failure. In 1950, he married Margaret Waller Freeman (1893?-1983), whom he had known for many years. Cabell suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in 1958 and on May 5, he died at his home in Richmond.
Cabell's writings, published in various magazines, newspapers and anthologies, included numerous short stories, poetry, essays, book reviews and one play. He had authored more than 52 volumes of work, including three devoted to genealogy. Today, some recognize Cabell as one of the first contemporary writers from the South. Like his friend and fellow Richmond writer Ellen Glasgow (1873-1945), Cabell was not afraid to satirize what he saw as the South's contradictions. Others, noting Cabell's unique blending of classic myths and legends with his own imagination, consider him a pioneer of fantasy writing. His work has been admired by a diverse group of writers, including Carl van Vechten, Margaret Mitchell, Edmund Wilson, Robert Heinlein, and Neil Gaiman.
Soon after Virginia Commonwealth University was established in 1968, when the Medical College of Virginia merged with Richmond Professional Institute, the University began plans for a new library for the Academic Campus. In 1970, the James Branch Cabell Library, named for one of Richmond's most respected writers, opened its doors.
Mother Goose Party.
Rarely in this hum-drum life of ours do we become participants in so beautiful a scene as the one we had the pleasure of witnessing on Easter Monday from 6 to 9 o'clock P.M. The occasion was the fifth birthday of Master James Branch Cabell, the eldest grandson of Mrs. M. L. Branch, and her house, No. 101 east Franklin, upon that night was the theatre of the prettiest Mother Goose party ever seen in our midst.
The juveniles ranked in number about seventy-five and from the ages of two years to ten. The hero of the occasion headed the grand march (which was played by Prof. Shepperdson) as Mother Goose's son Jack, in a lovely costume of pink and green satin, perfectly gotten up, even to the golden egg in his hand. By his side walked Mother Goose herself--viz., Miss Ella [Gabriella] Moncure. The quaint figure performed her part to the life, watching over her son Jack and his precious egg with a vigilant eye. Masters Robert G. Cabell and John Lottier Cabell were Little Boy Blue and Lavender Blue, two of the most attractive characters of the evening. Master Thomas McAdam[s] represented the Little Soldier no Bigger than my Thumb, and was so perfect in looks and so military in bearing as to win the hearts of all the young damsels, especially of Dame Trot, an old lady in name, but in reality a miss of four years--Miss Kate Minor, a sweet creature, who is destined to be one of our future belles. Little Master Bowie, aged eighteen months, as Bobbie Shafto, in blue satin sailor suit and bearing a comb to use as "combing down his yellow hair," was the observed of all observers.
