NOTE: "His lordship left by Adeliza, his wife, widow of King Henry I, four sons and three daughters, the eldest of whom, Alice, m. John, Earl of Ewe. The eldest son, William de Albini, 2nd earl, had a grant from the crown, 23rd Henry II [1177-78], of the Earldom of Sussex, and in the 1st of Richard I [1189-90], had a confirmation from that prince of the castle and honor of Arundel, as also of the Tertium Denarium of the county o Sussex. All other sources that I've found say that the William who m. Maud de St. Hillary was the son of William, the 1st Earl, and Adeliza. I have, thus, compressed this pedigree by omitting the intervening William who Burke styles 2nd earl.

Notes:
Henry de Percy, 4th Lord Percy, of Alnwick, a distinguished military commander in the reign of Edward III, who, assisting as marshal of England at the coronation of King Richard II, was advanced on the same day, 6 July, 1377, to the Earldom of Northumberland, with remainder to his heirs generally, and, like a barony in fee, transmissible, it would appear, to female as well as male heirs. He m. 1st, 1358, Margaret, dau. of Ralph, Lord Nevil, Ro Raby, and had issue. Henry, Thomas, Ralph, Alan, and Margaret. The earl m. 2ndly, Maud, sister and heir of Anthony, Lord Lucy, which Anthony settled upon his lordship and his heirs, the honour and castle of Cockermouth with other great estates, on condition that her arms should be forever quarterd with those of the Percys. In the 7th year of Richard II [1384], the earl having been elected one of the knights of the Garter, the king bestowed upon him the robes of the order out of the royal wardrobe. In some years afterwards, however, being proclaimed a traitor, and his land declared forfeited by King Richard, his lordship, in conjunction with his son, Sir Henry Percy, surnamed Hotspur, and Henry, Duke of Lancaster, accomplished the dethronement of that monarch and placed the crown upon the head of Henry, Duke of Lancaster, under the title of Henry IV. In requital, the king gave Percy the Isle of Man, by the tenure of carrying in the left hand the sword (which he wore when he landed in Holderness) at the coronation of himself and his successors. Against dissatisfied with the governemnt, the ducke is charged with concerting the rebellion, in which his son, Hotspur, and his brother, the Earl of Worcester, engaged, in 1403, for transferring the sceptre to Mortimer, Earl of March, then a boy. Of these two eminent persons, Sir Henry Percy, the renowned Hotspur, fell performing prodigies of valour, at Battle-field, near Shrewsbury, 21 July, 1403, and Thomas Percy, Earl of Worcester, was beheaded after the battle at Shrewsbury. The Earl of Northumberland fell subsequently (29 February, 1407-8), in arms against the king, at Bramham Moor, nearl Haslewood, when his honour became forfeited under an attainder, but were restored, in 1414, to his grandson (Hotspur's only son), Henry de Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland. Upon the death of his father in Venice, he was allowed to succeed him as Earl of Norfolk and Nottingham, but not as Duke of Norfolk. He also received his father's title of Earl Marshal, but on a strictly honorary basis, the military rank being held by Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland as the Marshal of England. He was betrothed to Constance Holland, daughter of John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter, then a child, but the marriage was never consummated.
A quarrel over precedence with Richard de Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick supposedly led to his estrangement from the court of Henry IV. Disaffected, he became involved with the latest rebellion of the Percies in the north, and raised an army with Richard le Scrope, Archbishop of York. Deserted by the Earl of Northumberland, Norfolk and Scrope were brought to book on Shipton Moor by a large royal army under John of Lancaster and the Earl of Westmorland. Seeking a parley, they were arrested as soon as they disbanded their followers. When Chief Justice Sir William Gascoigne refused to pass sentence upon them before they were tried by their peers, Henry had both summarily beheaded, without color of law, in York on June 8, 1405.

As a young man he became a commander in the English army in France. After his re-capture of Harfleur he was named a Knight of the Garter in 1436. After subsequent success he was created Earl of Dorset (1442) and the next year Marquess of Dorset. The year after that (1444) he succeeded his brother John as 4th Earl of Somerset in 1444. During the five year truce from 1444 to 1449, Somerset was Lieutenant of France. In 1448 he was created Duke of Somerset. Somerset found military success elusive after hostilities began again in 1449. By the summer of 1450 the bulk of the English possessions in northern France were in French hands. This loss lead to the fall of the king's chief minister, William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk. Somerset returned to England, where he took Suffolk's place as the king's counselor. A handsome and urbane courtier, his affair with King Henry V's widow, Queen, Katherine of France in 1427 created a political scandal. The focus of the war with the French now turned to Gascony, in the south of France. Here the English were no more successful, losing all by 1453. Soon afterwards the king went insane, Somerset's rival Richard, Duke of York was named Lord Protector, and Somerset was imprisoned in the Tower of London. His life was probably saved only by the king's recovery. Henry VI had Somerset released and returned to his position at court. The Duke of York was determined to depose Somerset by one means or another, and thus in May 1455 Richard, Duke of York raised an army and confronted Somerset and the king. Somerset was killed in the resulting engagement, known as the First Battle of St Albans. It was the beginning of the Wars of the Roses, which would go on to claim many of Somerset's sons and relatives. He was succeeded as duke by his son Henry. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

146. | 1st Duke of Norfolk, 6th Baron Mowbray, 7th Baron Segrave, Earl of Nottingham Thomas de Mowbray (80.John10, 46.John9, 28.Aline8, 21.Elizabeth7, 15.Raymond6, 12.Mabel5, 10.Nicole4, 4.William3, 2.William2, 1.William1) was born on 22 Mar 1366 in Epworth, Isle of Axholme, Lincolnshire, England; died on 22 Sep 1399 in Venice, Venezia, Veneto, Italy; was buried in St.George Abbey, Venice, Italy. Notes:
On 10 February 1382, he succeeded his brother John as 6th Baron Mowbray and 7th Baron Segrave, and soon afterwards was created Earl of Nottingham, a title that had also been created for his elder brother. Three years later he was appointed Earl Marshal of England, and in that capacity he fought against the Scots and then against the French.
Lord Nottingham was one of the Lords Appellant to King Richard II who deposed some of King Richard's court favorites in 1387. The King's uncle, Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester, was imprisoned at Calais, where Nottingham was Captain. When Gloucester was killed in 1397, it was probably at the King's orders and probably with Nottingham's involvement. A few weeks later he was created Duke of Norfolk, though his aged grandmother, the Duchess of Norfolk, was still alive. When she died the next year he also became 3rd Earl of Norfolk.
Later, in 1398, Norfolk quarrelled with Henry of Bolingbroke, 1st Duke of Hereford (later King Henry IV), apparently due to mutual suspicions stemming from their roles in the conspiracy against the Duke of Gloucester. The King banished them both. After Hereford returned and usurped the throne, Norfolk was stripped of the Dukedom of Norfolk, though he retained his other titles. He died of the plague in Venice, on 22 September 1399.
The matter of Norfolk's quarrel and subsequent banishment is depicted at the beginning of Shakespeare's Richard II.

At the beginning of the War of the Roses in 1450 he supported Richard, Duke of York, the leader of the Yorkist faction. However, in 1459, he swore allegiance to the Lancastrian Henry VI. He then quickly changed sides back to the Yorkists. This sort of treachery was by no means unusual during the Wars of the Roses.
In February 1461 he fought for the defeated Yorkists in the Second Battle of St Albans. In March 1461 (Richard, Duke of York now being dead) he was one of those who asked the Duke’s son the Earl of March to become Edward IV and later that month his intervention at the Battle of Towton was decisive. The battle took place in a snow storm between 80,000 men. Neither side could get an advantage until about midday Norfolk entered the battle on the Yorkist’s right flank. The Lancastrians then began to slowly fall back. As Earl Marshal Mowbray then officiated at Edward IV’s coronation.

Notes:
Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset (1438? - May 6, 1471) was an English nobleman and military commander during the Wars of the Roses.
He was the son of Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset, and became duke at the death of his brother Henry in 1464. (The dukedom was somewhat theoretical, depending on how one views the legitimacy of the forfeiture of the title by the 3rd duke during the reign of Edward IV, which was retracted by Henry VII long after Somerset's death.)
Edmund commanded the center of the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Barnet, (14 April 1471). Edmund also commanded the right of the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Tewkesbury, (4 May 1471) and was captured and then executed several days after the battle. His younger brother John Beaufort was slain during the Battle of Tewkesbury, making Edmund's death the end of the legitimate Beaufort line and, with the death shortly thereafter of Henry VI, left his cousin Margaret Beaufort and her son, Henry of Richmond, the future Henry VII, as the leading representatives of the House of Lancaster. Buried with his brother John Beaufort in Tewkesbury Abbey, in Gloucestershire.

Notes:
Edward IV, son of Richard, Duke of York and Cicely Neville, was born in 1442. He married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464, the widow of the Lancastrian Sir John Grey, who bore him ten children. He also entertained many mistresses and had at least one illegitimate son.
Edward came to the throne through the efforts of his father; as Henry VI became increasingly less effective, Richard pressed the claim of the York family but was killed before he could ascend the throne: Edward deposed his cousin Henry after defeating the Lancastrians at Mortimer's Cross in 1461. Richard Neville, the Kingmaker, Earl of Warwick proclaimed Henry king once again in 1470, but less than a year elapsed when Edward reclaimed the crown and had Henry executed in 1471.
The rest of his reign was fairly uneventful. He revived the English claim to the French throne and invaded the weakened France, extorting a non-aggression treaty from Louis XI in 1475 which amounted to a lump payment of 75,000 crowns, and an annuity of 20,000. Edward had his brother, George, Duke of Clarendon, judicially murdered in 1478 on a charge of treason. His marriage to Elizabeth Woodville vexed his councilors, and he allowed many of the great nobles (such as his brother Richard) to build uncharacteristically large power bases in the provinces in return for their support.
Edward died suddenly in 1483, leaving behind two sons aged twelve and nine, five daughters, and a troubled legacy.
Edward married Elizabeth Woodville on 1 May 1464 in Grafton Regis, Northants, England. Elizabeth (daughter of 1st Earl Rivers Richard Woodville and Jacquetta de Luxembourg, Duchess of Bedford) was born in 1437 in Grafton Regis, Worcestershire, England; died on 8 Jun 1492 in Bermondsey Abbey, Surrey, England; was buried in Windsor, Berkshire, England.
