Peter Jefferson, the father of the President, was a native of
Chesterfield, and removed to the present limits of Albemarle in 1737. He
entered the wilderness literally, as when he first came there were but
three or four persons living in the neighborhood. His first entry was
that of a thousand

acres on the south side of the Rivanna, between Monticello Mountain and
the Henderson land above Milton. Wishing a more eligible site for his
house, he bought from his friend William Randolph, of Tuckahoe, the
Shadwell tract of four hundred acres, where his distinguished son was
born. He had been a magistrate and Sheriff in Goochland, and when
Albemarle was formed, was one of its original magistrates, and its
Lieutenant Colonel. He also represented the county in the House of
Burgesses. He was employed with Colonel Joshua Fry to run the boundary
line between Virginia and North Carolina, and to make the first map of
Virginia ever drafted. When William Randolph died in 1747, leaving a son
of tender age, he committed him to Mr. Jefferson's care, and more
efficiently to discharge this trust Mr. Jefferson removed to Tuckahoe,
where he resided seven years. This circumstance explains the difficulty
in Mr. Waddell's mind, when in his Annals of Augusta County, he wondered
how Thomas Lewis and his friends, who had gone to Mr. Jefferson's to make
a map of the survey of the Northern Neck line, could ride from his house
to Richmond to hear preaching on Sunday. He returned to Albemarle in
1755, and died in 1757. His wife was Jane, daughter of Isham Randolph, of
Dungeness, and his children Jane, who died unmarried, Thomas, Randolph,
Mary, the wife of Thomas Bolling, Martha, the wife of Dabney Carr, Lucy,
the wife of Charles Lilburn Lewis, and Ann, the wife of Hastings Marks.

Thomas was born in 1743, married in 1771 Martha, daughter of John Wayles,
of Charles City, and widow of Bathurst Skelton, and died July 4, 1826. He
had two daughters, Martha, the wife of Governor Thomas Mann Randolph, and
Mary, the wife of John W. Eppes. He was one of the largest landholders in
the county, being assessed in 1820 with four thousand eight hundred and
ninety-nine acres. Soon after attaining his majority, he was appointed a
magistrate of the county, and at the first session of the County Court
after his decease, the following memorial was entered upon its records:

"As a testimonial of respect for the memory of Thomas Jefferson, who
devoted a long life to the service of his country,

the principles of liberty, and the happiness of mankind; who aided
conspicuously in the cause of the American Revolution; who drafted the
Declaration of the principles, on which the Independence of these States
was declared; who uniformly exerted his great talents to aid both the
civil and religious liberties of his countrymen, and by whose practical
administration of the principles he had promulgated in many stations,
legislative, diplomatic and executive, in which he had acted as a public
functionary, the equal rights of his countrymen were promoted, and
secured at home and abroad; who, uniting to a native benevolence a
cultivated philanthropy, was peculiarly endeared to his countrymen and
neighbors, who were witnesses of his virtue:

Resolved therefore that this testimonial be recorded as a perpetual
memorial of respect and affection of his countrymen, and of the Court of
Albemarle, of which he was once a member; and

Resolved that this Court and its officers, as a testimony of public
respect, will wear crape on the left arm for thirty days, and will now
adjourn."

Randolph Jefferson in 1781 married Ann, daughter of Charles Lewis Jr., of
Buck Island. He had his residence in Fluvanna County. He had two sons,
Thomas and Isham R. Thomas was twice married, first to his cousin Mary
R., daughter of Charles Lilburn Lewis, and secondly in 1858 to Mrs.
Elizabeth Barker, daughter of Henry Siegfried. His children were Peter
Field and Robert L. Peter Field lived in Scottsville, and by his
shrewdness and frugality amassed a large fortune. He died in 1861,
leaving a son bearing his own name, and a daughter, the wife of Peter
Foland. Peter Field Jr., died in 1867. Robert L. married Elizabeth,
daughter of Robert Moorman, lived near Porter's Precinct, and died in
1858. His children were Eldridge, who lived in the same section of the
county till after the war, and Mary, the wife of Albert W. Gantt.

A story is told of Randolph, that one day he came to his brother to
unburden his mind of a weighty idea that had struck him, and announced
himself thus: "Tom, I'll tell you

how to keep the squirrels from pillaging the corn. You see they always
get on the outside row. Well then, don't plant any outside row"--which,
if true, well illustrates a reflection of Miss Sarah Randolph, "It is
curious to remark the unequal distribution of talent in this family, each
gifted member seeming to have been made so at the expense of one of the
others."

A Thomas Jefferson, who in the first days of the county was one of its
deputy Surveyors, was no doubt a brother of Peter, the President's
father.

"Lunenburg, VA had, as we shall see, an important part in the struggle between the vestries and the Colonial Governors". "When the county was created in 1745 it embraced, in addition to its present area, the now comprised in Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and the greater part of Bedford and Campbell counties". "This great area was comprised in one parish and was named Cumberland. While Lunenburg County and Cumberland parish were created by the act of 1745, it was provided that they should come into existence 'from and immediately after the first day of May next'". "in 1746 the vestry ordered a chapel forty-eight feet by twenty-four feet to be build near Reedy Creek. This was near Lunenburg Court House. Reference: Hening V. 3110 "it was directed by the Act that the sheriff should advertise 'some convenient time and place' for the meeting of the 'freeholders and housekeepers' to elect 'twelve of the most able and discreet persons' of the parish as vestrymen". John Harris, son of Thomas Harris and Mary Jefferson, married c.1728 in Henrico County, Virginia to Ursula Jordan. They lived in Goochland County, Virginia the part that was south of the James River when it broke off Henrico. In King William Parish this was right in the middle of the Huguenot settlement around Manikin and early records lists him sometimes as John or sometimes as Jean depending on who made the list. King William parish had services in both French and English. He and his brother in law Captain Francis James were both listed as house carpenters at times. John and Ursula had A. Elizabeth Harris b 31 Dec 1729 in Goochland County, Virginia and died 19 May 1791 her will is in book 1 Powhatan County, Virginia. She married in April 1748 to Samuel Flournoy son of the Huguenot immigrant John James Flournoy. B. John Harris b 1732 in Goochland County, Virginia his will was proved Nov 1800 in Powhatan County, Virginia see will book 1. He married 29 August 1754 (see Douglas Register) to Anne Obedience Turpin. Most of their records are in Cumberland before Powhatan County, broke off. Ursula died shortly after John was born and Sarah Harris daughter of Thomas Harris and Mary Jefferson - John's sister came to live with them and raise the children. John accumulated much land and eventually was known as Gent rather than house carpenter the Gent probably referring to the offices he held in the county. He did have a reputed son Jesse Harris born 14 June 1741 to Elizabeth Robards in King William parish the godfather was John Bernard and Jean Chastain. the Godmother Charlotte Judith Chastain. Elizabeth Robards was put out of the parish. John Harris will was written 28 March 1749 and proved May 1751 in Cumberland County, Virginia His executors were brothers James Harris, Benjamin Harris and William Harris witnessed by Bennet Goode (his nephew) and Charles Clark.

The Benjamin that was the son of Thomas Harris and Mary Jefferson (also my line was raised in Henrico County, where you will find the will of both Thomas Harris and Mary Jefferson Harris. He married Frances Platt the daughter of thomas Platt of Henrico County, and his wife Sarah ?. When Goochland broke off Henrico in 1727 or 28 the Harris boys were in Goochland in the part that then lay south of the James R. Benjamin had to sue his brother in laws for Frances inheritance and that is found in Goochland Records. There is also a later notation that Sukey and Joe negro slaves of Benjamin Harris were charged for giving poisen to Mary and Anne Harris daughters of his first marriage. This was some time after his second marriage to Priscilla Wager daughter of Wm Wager who I believe at that time was the clerk of the Elizabeth City County, court The slaves were found NOT GUILTY. these girls were both married in Manikin see Douglas Register. Mary is mentioned in Benjamins will written 24 April 1776. JEFFERSON ON HIS CHILDHOOD & YOUTH

"When I consider that at fourteen years of age the whole care and direction of myself was thrown on myself entirely, without a relative or a friend qualified to advise or guide me, and recollect the various sorts of bad company with which I associated from time to time, I am astonished that I did not turn off with some of them, and become as worthless to society as they were. From the circumstances of my position, I was often thrown into the society of horseracers, cardplayers, foxhunters, scientific and professional men, and of dignified men; and many a time have I asked myself, in the enthusiastic death of a fox, the victory of a favorite horse, the issue of a question eloquently argued at the bar, or in the great council of the nation, "Well, which of these kinds of reputation should I prefer--that of a horsejockey, a foxhunter, an orator, or the honest advocate of my country's rights?"

He caroused with the boys, flirted with the girls, studied late into the night, and fixed his eye on Rebecca Burwell, a beautiful orphan whom moony 19 year old Tom petnamed Belinda. For months his adolescent letters--embarrassing now to read--were full of Belinda. His selfconscious infatuation soon embarrassed him, too. When he gathered up his courage to approach her, Tom made a fool of himself. He wrote "in the most melancholy fit that ever any poor soul was":

"Last night, as merry as agreeable company and dancing with Belinda in the Apollo could make me, I never could have thought the succeeding sun would have seen me so wretched as I now am. I was prepared to say a great deal. I had dressed up in my own mind such thoughts as occurred to me, in as moving language as I know how, and expected to have performed in a tolerably creditable manner. But, good God! when I had an opportunity of venting them, a few broken sentences, uttered in great disorder, and interrupted with pauses of uncommon length, were the too visible marks of my strange confusion."

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Six feet two and a half inches tall, thin, square shouldered, strong, Jefferson was straight as a gun barrel. He neglected fashion in clothes and hair, never lost a tooth, but seldom smiled or showed any expression. Stiff with strangers and acutely sensitive to personal slights, he found nothing so goading as to be contradicted in company by his wife. Under stress he was prone to migraines that lasted weeks. He liked to toss off bits of his learning, but when he spoke in public his voice was hoarse and guttural. He ate little meat, and then as a condiment for his vegetables. Peas were his favorite. He did not drink strong wines or spirits, rose by dawn, and left his room by eight after bathing his feet in cold water.

1781/82 Francois Jean, Marquis de Chastellux, who found Jefferson at his best. Chastellux wrote:

Let me describe to you a man not yet forty, tall, and with a mild pleasing countenance, but whose mind and understanding are ample substitutes for every exterior grace. An American who without ever quitting his country, is at once a musician, skilled in drawing, a geometrician, an astronomer, a natural philosopher, legislator, and statesman . . . and it seems as if from his youth he had placed his mind, as he had done his house, on an elevated situation, from which he might contemplate the universe. . . . We may safely aver that Mr. Jefferson is the first American who has consulted the arts to know how he should shelter himself from the weather.

IX. Conclusion
Under Virginia law, unless there is an admission of paternity by the father, a claim must be pursued under the statutory procedure. Evidence to establish paternity means oral testimony or documents that pass the legal test of admissibility. The case against Thomas Jefferson is devoid of admissible evidence.

There is no direct evidence from any source during JeffersonÃss%sss lifeeeee that he was the fatttheeer of any of the children born to Sally Hemings between 1790 and 1808. Although Jefferson was present at Monticello during each of SallyÃss%s conceptions, there is no proof thattt shhhee waaasss att Monticello during these periods. There is also not a scintilla of proof of any cohabitation or physical intimacy between Jefferson and Hemings during the approximate thirty years she resided at Monticello.

The two prominent documents written after Jefferson's death and relied on as paternity evidence are hearsay and inadmissible. These are the Parton letter, which raised for the first time the resemblance claim against Jefferson, and the Madison Hemings memoirs which created the treaty legend.

The 1998 DNA test results identify a chromosomal link between Eston Hemings and the male Jefferson line. Thomas Jefferson is included among the twenty-five possible fathers, but he is eliminated because of the lack of admissible evidence.

It is surprising that the sources and the nature of the information that make up the Tom and Sally myth has put the academic community into such a quandary. It is a tale which should return to its status as no more than a footnote to the Jefferson legacy.

Poplar Forest Commentary

"Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, inherited the plantation known as Poplar Forest from her father in 1773. Theworking tobacco farm of 4,812 acres eventually provided Jefferson with a significant portion of his cash income. The plantation also offered the perfect site for his most personal architectural achievement -- a unique octagonal house set withinan elaborately designed landscape. In this meticulously planned retreat he had the seclusion to pursue his passion forreading, writing, studying, and gardening." In the early years of his ownership of Poplar Forest, Jefferson was increasingly active in public service. He practiced law, was a member of the House of Burgesses, Governor of Virginia, Minister to France, and President of the United States for two terms. Even with these responsibilities, he began managing the plantation operations at Poplar Forest and moved slave labor there. In 1781, Jefferson eluded capture by the British by retreating to his Bedford County plantation. During this extended visit Jefferson compiled much of the material for his only book, Notes on the State of Virginia. Little is known about the dwelling used by Jefferson during these early visits.

In 1806, Jefferson supervised the laying of the foundation for the octagonal house he had designed. After his second term as President ended in 1809, Jefferson made regular visits to his Bedford retreat. He usually took three to four trips per year and stayed from two weeks to two months. His visits often coincided with the seasonal responsibilities of the working plantation and he also oversaw the embellishment of the house, the planting of his vegetable garden and the adornment of the grounds. Family members, usually his grandchildren, joined Jefferson on many of his visits. At Poplar Forest he could escape the almost perpetual round of visitors at Monticello and enjoy what he called "the solitude of a hermit."

Jefferson made his last trip to Poplar Forest in 1823 when he settled his grandson, Francis Eppes, on the property. Ill health prevented future visits to his retreat. In 1828, two years after Jefferson's death, Eppes sold Poplar Forest to a neighbor.

Apart from Jefferson's philosophical stance on slavery, there was the paradox inherent in his own life. Though he undoubtedly believed that slavery violated the principles of natural law he had included in the Declaration of Independence, he was a wealthy slave owner whose lifestyle depended upon the institution. Jefferson viewed himself and his slaves as victims of mankind's failure to rid itself of this terrible institution, and he contented himself with the idea that he would be a benevolent master to those he owned, until the "peculiar institution" met with its rightful end.

In hindsight, Jefferson's stance on slavery is inescapably hypocritical. History's view of him has been complicated even more by the increasingly unavoidable conclusion that he was sexually involved with one of his house servants, Sally Hemings, and that he fathered at least one, if not several, of her children. Allegations that he was sexually involved with Hemings surfaced as early as 1802, when the disgruntled journalist James Callendar (allegedly the same man Jefferson had hired to libel Adams during the 1796 presidential election) published the accusation, which had been circling as gossip in Virginia for several years. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, contradictory evidence surfaced: Madison Hemings, born in 1805, claimed to be Jefferson's child; just a year later, an account was published claiming that Jefferson's nephew, Peter Carr, had confessed to Jefferson's daughter Martha that he had been the father of all or most of Sally's children. Jefferson's direct descendants, Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Ellen Randolph Coolidge, stood by the conclusion that either Peter or Samuel Carr (both Jefferson's nephews) had fathered Hemings' children.

The question of a Jefferson-Hemings liaison remained a bone of contention among branches of the Jefferson, Randolph, and Hemings familiesÃssaassssss welllll as Jefferson scholars throughouuuut tthee nineteenth and twentieth centuries... In November 1998, dramatic new scientific evidence became available through the analysis of the DNA of male descendants of both Hemings and Jefferson. After comparing the Y-chromosome component of the DNA of a descendant of Jefferson's paternal uncle, Field Jefferson, with that of a descendant of another of Hemings' sons, Eston (born 1808), Dr. Eugene Foster of the University of Virginia found an exact match of certain portions of the DNA (the odds of a perfect match in a random sample are less than one in a thousand). In January 2000, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation accepted the conclusion, supported by Foster's DNA evidence, that Jefferson and Hemings were sexual partners, and that they had between one and six children between 1790 and 1808.

Randolph Jefferson, (have seen some reference to his first name being John) younger brother of Preident Thomas Jefferson was first married to his first cousin, Anna Lewis, daughter of Charles Lilburn Lewis and Mary Randolph. His second marriage was to
Mitchie B. Pryor, daughter of David Pryor of Buckingham County Virginia.

Herbert and Evelyn Barger, compilers of this Jefferson genealogy, have visited the outside of this home, "Snowden" located just across the James River from Scottsville, Virginia on State Route 747. A painting of this old, but now renovated home, is on display at the Scottsville Museum. The Bargers have a picture of this painting and slides and information of the home of Peter Field Jefferson, Randolph's grandson and son of Thomas. The former Scott home, "Mount Walla" was built by John Scott of the town's founder's family. Evelyn Barger is Randolph's first cousin, six generations
removed.

Randolph attended William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia beginning at age sixteen n 1771 and finishing in 1772. He also shared his brother Thomas's love of music and studied the violin under the same instructor as did Thomas. During the Revolutionary War he served in the Virginia Light Dragoons. He was commissioned a Captain of Buckingham Militia in 1794. Randolph patented or was granted 1327 acres in Buckingham County Virginia on May 30, 1800. The land was adjoining Robert Craig on Big
Georges Creek.

The book THOMAS JEFFERSON AND HIS UNKNOWN BROTHER RANDOLPH,
University of VA, Charlottesville 1942 states:
"Randolph, born at Shadwell on Oct 1, 1755, was 12 years younger than Thomas, With his twin sister, Anna Scott, he was the last of the ten children... He was two years old, and Thomas was fourteen when his father died in 1757. ... "He twice married. On July 30, 1780 he married Anne Jefferson Lewis the daughter of colonel Charles Lewis of Buck Island. she was his first cousin, and the sister of Charles Lilburne Lewis, who in 1769 had married Randolph's sister Lucy. The Lewis and Jefferson families became even more closely connected later on when Thomas, the son of Randolph, married Mary Randolph, the daughter of Lucy Jefferson Lewis

Randolph, by his first wife, who died sometime before 1808, had five sons: Thomas, Robert Lewis, Field, Isham Randolph, and James Lilburne; and a daughter, Anna Scott. His second wife was Mitchie B. Pryor, Daughter of David Pryor of Buckingham county.
He married her in 1808 or 1809, and by her had one son, John Jefferson. ... A grandson Peter Field (the son of Randolph's son Thomas) was a country merchant made what the little town of Scottsville considered a large fortune.

John was a member of the Cumberland County Committee of Safety 1775-76 Col John Harris PSVA Revolution Comm. of Safety for Cumberland County Virginia One of the builders of the James River and Kanawa Canel which made it possible for tobacco shipments and other shipments to get around the Falls on the James River at Richmond and on downriver to be shipped. The other men involved in the building were George Washington, yes the president, David Ross, Wm Cabell and Edward Randolph.

Col. John Harris was born in Goochland County, Virginia in 1732 married 17 August 1754 in Cumberland County, Virginia (mg record) to Anne Obedience Turpin b 1734 daughter of Thomas Turpin and Mary Jefferson. Thomas Turpin was the son of Thomas Turpin and Obedience Branch. Mary Jefferson was daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Field. Col. John had 8 children according to the Turpin daybook which is now in a California museum and has been published in the Virginia Mag. Col. John built a large brick mansion which I have a picture of which I got from the Museum in Richmond and which has since been destroyed. Obedience Turpin Harris died before her husband. C. Lt John Harris Revol b 12 October 1758 Cumberland County, Virginia MY LINE he was the son of Col John Harris and Anne Obedience Turpin. His father deeded him land in Powhatan County, Virginia in 1785 and it is thought that he married about that time. I do not have his first wifes name or place of mg. according to later census he had a boy and a girl born shortly after 1785 living with him I believe the boy was named John but untraced. and I do not know the name of the girl or if either survived to adulthood. I do know that John sold out his Powhatan co land to a relative Thomas Harris which deed also covered household furniture etc. Lt. John married 2nd 24 May 1794 in Chesterfield County, Virginia to Rebecca Britton daughter of Anderson Brittton and Ann Mills Rebecca was much younger than John and in the 2 0 years that they were married had 12 children as follows (taken from pension application which copied the family bible) l. Xenophen Harris 11 March 1795 - dead by 1810 never married 2. HIRAM HARRIS MY LINE b 15 Sept 1796 died between 1st of May and June 3 1867 who married l. 30 May 1822 in St. Johns church Richmond Virginia to Margaret Christian of charles city County, Virginia daughter of Henry Benskin Christian and his wife Elizabeth Christian . THIS MY LINE SEE LATER they had 2 children Mgt christian Harris died in 1825 He married 2. Margaret Wilson and had a daughter Eleanor Harris Mgt Wilson died and he married 3. Elizabeth Gathwright and had Hiram Jr. John W. and Margaret Harris who married Mr. Benson I do not know what happened to that marriage whether Elizabeth Gathwright Harris died or left. However Hiram Harris married 4. Frances Gordon of Powhatan co Virginia Hiram Harris served in the war of 1812 in a Calvary unit known as Capt Heths County Hiram lived at Fairfield in Powhatan County, until he died leaving a will there mentioning his children including his first children Dr. Henry Benskin Christian Harris of Missouri and his daughter Rebecca who Had married John Wilson she became a widow and married 2nd ----------Douglas. Frances Gordon Harris applied for a pension on Hirams war of 1812 service. which I have.

4. Ann Obedience Turpin Harris d of Lt John and Rebecca Britton b 27 April 1799 married 8 April 1819 Chesterfield County, Virginia to Dr. Wm ANDERSON Pattison. She died 31 August 1831.

5. Judith Jordena Harris d of Lt John and Rebecca Britton b 14 Sep t 1800 Chesterfield County, Virginia died 20 January 1832 married 16 October 1818 in Chesterfield co Virginia becoming the third wife of Colin McRae her sister Hypatias widower. She raised her sister Hypatias daughter and had several children by Colin McRae she left a non computive (sp) will providing for her sisters daughter and her own children equally.

I have their children

11. Mary Ellen Harris b 26 April 1812 in Chesterfield County, Virginia married 10 October 1833 Chesterfield County, Virginia to Samuel Austin Pattison she died 6 weeks later and he married her niece Hypatia Harris McRae only child of her sister Hypatia Harris and Colin Mc Rae I have their family.

12. Camilla Harris b 28 October 1814 in Chesterfield County, Virginia married 10 October 1848 in Chesterfield or Richmond Virginia to the Rev. Horace Stringfellow.

While living in Chesterfield they had a plantation known as "Rattlesnake Springs" Lt. John died there the 4 December 1815 and was buried there. Said plantation now covered by the city of Chesterfield but formerly Manchester. Rebecca Britton Harris died in 1857 leaving a will and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery Richmond Virginia on a large corner lot surrounded by an iron fence. I believe her husband Johns son by the first mg is also buried there. but I know nothing about him.

4, Judith Harris daughter of Col John and Anne Obedience Turpin b 1760 In Cumberland County, Virginia married 21 August 1783 in Powhatan County, Virginia to Lt. John Cirttenden Revol. Virginia they removed to woodford County, Kentucky where he died in 1806 They left a family of Judges, Statesmen and legislaturs establishing the Crittenden family of Kentucky with a county named after them.

5. Mary Elizabeth Josepha Harris d of Col John and Anne Obedience Turpin b 1761 in Cumberland County, Virginia married 29 February 1792 Powhatan County, Virginia to Lt Wade Netherland Woodson Revol. They lived in Powhatan County, Virginia had a family and when Mary died there 22 May 1812 He removed to Knox County, Kentucky where he married an Alice Cheek and had 2 children one of which became Gov. of Missouri.

Dr Francis Harris son of col John Harris and Anne Obedience turpin. b 7 May 1768 in Cumberland County, Virginia he died 5 December 1836 and his inventory was made 20 Dec 1836 in Powhatan County, Virginia he married January 20 1799 in Powhatan Co Virginia to Sally Gaines Turpin. He had several children but only one known son Lawrence Browne Harris not traced Note many of the early genealogies assumed Benjamin Harris son of Thomas Harris and Mary Jefferson of Henrico County, married Anne Eppes. This confusion was compounded by the fact that Anne Eppes father Francis Eppes had left 2 or his daughters land in what became Cumberland County I have worked on the line of this Benjamin Harris who had sons Richard, Benjamin , John Skip Harris Francis Harris and Joseph Harris to name a few without much success I know this Benjamin was a Lawyer and in partnership at one time with John Wayles Thomas Jeffersons father in law. Joseph his son married twice to a Howard and a Shelton John Skip married a Walker and had a daughter Francis and Richard went south Benjamin I believe married a Nance. would be VERY MUCH INTERESTED IN WHERE THIS BENJAMIN who died I think in 1757 fit into the Harris line Fran

Notes:

Bennett was a prosperous planter who grew up at Osbourne, a hamlet on the James River 15 miles below Whitby. He later settled in Powhatan County, Virginia, on the James River near the mouth of Genito Creek.

There was reference in the Colonial Statutes of 1742, of the establishing of a ferry from Bennett Goode's land across the James River to the land of Col. John Flemming, in Gouchland County, Virginia. This he sold in1759 to man named Jude, and it later became known as Jude's Ferry. he then moved to a place on Fine Creek, about five miles away, which he later left to his son John. On September 5, 1768, 369 acres in Gouchland County, Virginia were listed in his name.

Moved with his mother to Mechlenburg County, Virginia, and subsequently established "Fine Creeks" in Powhatan County, Virginia

1720 is also given as a possible birth date.

The Will of Bennett Goode
In the name of God amen, I Bennit Goode of the Parrish of Southam and the county of Cumberland, being sick & weak of body but in perfect sence and memory, do make & ordain this to be my last will and testament: My will is that my body be decently interred: and my worldly goods which it hath bin pleased
God to give me (after my just debts be paid) I give & dispose of them in manner and form as followth.

First I lend my beloved wife Martha Goode the plantation whereon I now live, and the use of the and adjoining and included within a line, beginning at a new mark'd Pine on Deep Creek road, thence to a new mark'd line to my spring branch, down the spring branch to the mouth (I mean to where the ditch that runs down the spring branch ends (thence a south line to Fine Creek, up the creek to a white oak formerly a corner of Bassetts & Stephen Woodsons, thence a new line of mark'd trees to a corner White oak, formally a corner between Daniel Willmore and myself, thence on a line that was between Willmore and myself to the road, thence down the road to the beginning, during her natural life. I also lend my beloved wife Martha Goode, during her natural life, five Negroes to wit: Sezar, Mary, Dinah, Chas, Hamtom and at her death I desire that she may divide them among my children as she thinks proper, to them and their heirs forever.

Item; I give and bequeath to my son John the plantation and land as mentioned before (and lent to my beloved wife, being the same as I now live on) after the death of my wife, to him and his heirs forever, also one feather bed and furniture & my young boy James Alley to him and his heirs forever.

Item; I give and bequeath to my son Bennit the tract of land I bought of Capt John Bailey and part of my other land adjoining to the line to begin at the corner between David Seizer and Baileys tract and run strait a southwest corse to Deep creek road thence down the road to Daniel Willmore's line till it joins Bailies tract to him and his heirs forever.

Item; I also give and bequeath to my son Bennit one feather bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever.

Item; I give and bequeath to my son Thomas a parcel of land adjoining the land that I have lent my wife and given to my son John beginning at John upper corner on Deep creek and thence up the road to Bennits corner, thence down Bennits line to David Seizers corner, thence on David Seizers land to his upper corner, from thence a short line to where the long branch crosses Deep creek road, thence dowh the long branch to Fine creek, thence down Fine creek to my son Johns corner, thence on my son Johns line to Deep creek road to the beginning, to him and his heirs forever.

Item; I give and bequeath to my son William that parcel of land which now lies below my son Johns new line and the spring branch, adjoining Deep creek road Pleasants line and Fine creek to him and his heirs forever.

Item; I lend to my daughter Mary Saunders two Negroes, to wit Neptun and Nell for her use during her natural life, and at her deth, to be equally divided between her children (if she has any) if not they are to return and be equally divided between my other daughters to them and their heirs forever.

Item; My will is that my Negroes remain together till the twenty fifth day of December seventeen hundred and seventy one, in order to raise as much money as will pay Captn. Bailey for his land, but if it should so happen that the money should not be raised in that time, they must be continued together till the twenty fifth of December following.

And my will further is, that when Captn Bailey has received payment for his land which I expect may be done in the time I have allotted that the remainder of my Negroes which I have not before mentioned in this my will, be equally divided between my sons, John, Bennit, Thomas, William, and my daughters, Martha, Alice, Elizabeth, Lucy, and Salley, to them and their heirs forever.

And, I do by this my will appoint Richard Liggon, Jacob Michaux, Joseph Mayo & John Hughes to divide the remainder of my Negroes equally between my children as mentioned above.

Item; I give and bequeath to my son Bennit one dark bay horse with a blase face called & known by the name of Harliquin, to him & his heirs forever.

Item; I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Martha Goode the one half of my stock of cattle , hogs, sheep, and horses to her and her heirs forever. I also lend her the use of my household furniture that I have not given during her natural life and at her deth to be equally divided between my four sons John, Bennit, Thomas, and William, to them and their heirs forever.

Item; I also give the other half of my stock of cattle, hogs, sheep, and horses to be equally divided between my four sons to them and their heirs forever.

I desire that my estate not be appraised.

Lastly, I do ordain and appoint my two sons John Goode, Bennit Goode and John Hughes executors to this my last will and testament hereby revok9ing all former wills made by me.

He married l. 27 March 1793 in Amelia County, Virginia to an heiress Martha Wilson that brought with her marriage some 30 odd slaves.

"8 Sept 1815 Sileas Flournoy vs James Austin, debt $636.24 ...From the handwriting of various entries concerning cases where Aalfred M. Harris is attorney, which entries he makes himself, which handwriting is same as these entries. Harris was Flournoy's attorney. Silas Flournoy at that time was living in Davidson County, Tennessee east of Nashville where Mud Tavern Station in the Lebanon railroad stands. His wife Martha Cannon is buried there. He was my great grandfather. He came to Davidson County in 1807 and to Giles County in 1816. He was the son of Samuel Flournoy of Powhatan County Virginia who died at his place, Farmington, near Jude's Ferry of the James River in October 1780, and who himself was one of the sons of the immigrant, John James Flournoy. Samuel is buried at Farmington. I do not know where the immigrant is buried. He died in March 1740. The decent of this immigrant from Laurent Flournoy who died in France after the massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572."

Hiram Harris son of Lt John Harris of Powhatan and Chesterfield County, Virginia and his wife Rebecca Britton. was born 15 September 1796 in Powhatan County, T he Harris family lived south of the James near Manikin which fell into Goochland c 1727 or 8 then became Cumberland County, then became Powhatan all without having to move. Hiram inherited a plantation in Powhatan County, Virginia and 19,000.00 in his fathers will of 1815. He enlisted in Capt Heths calvary unit in the war of 1812 At the age of 16 or 17. He married in St Johns Church Richmond va 20 May 1822 the cermony was performed by Rev. W. Hart. His bride was Margaret Christian only child of Henry Benskin Christian Harris of charles City County, Virginia and his wife Elizabeth Christian of New Kent County, Virginia Elizabeth Christian died after Margarets birth and Henry Benskin Christian married again to a Mrs. Bradley.

Hiram and Margaret had two children 1. Rebecca Ann D Harris born 3 March 1823 in Chesterfield County, Virginia she married 1. 30 January 1840 in Chesterfield co Virginia to John Wilson and 2 after her husband died married Alfred Douglas. I have not traced her dec 2. Dr Benskin Christian Harris b 3 Feb 1825 in Powhatan County, Virginia His mother died when he was 6 weeks old. Hiram Harris then married again to Margaret Wilson d of John Wilson and had child 3. Mary Eleanor Harris b 28 Sept 1827 she died in infancy. Hiram married 3rd Elizabeth Gathwright and had 4. John Wilson Harris b 1837 in Manchester Virginia he is not traced but was alive in 1867. 5. Hiram Harris b c 1840 not traced not mentioned in Hirams will. 6 Mary Eleanor Harris ll b c 1845 not mentioned in Hirams will It is possible that she survived and married a McRae. 7. Margaret Elizabeth Harris b 1847 Powhatan County, Virginia married after 1867 John E. Benson and had Eleanor Harris Benson.

Hiram is on 1810 census in his fathers household In 1820 He is on his land with overseer and slaves 1830 in Chesterfield County, Virginia 1840 Chesterfield co Virginia 1850 in Powhatan County, Virginia 493 493 54 M farmer 6,000 He married 10 October 1853 Frances Gordon of Powhatan County, Virginia no children. He died between May 1 and June 3 1867 with a will in Powhatan County, Virginia mentioning his children Dr. Henry Benskin Christian of Missouri daughter Rebecca Ann Douglas, and daughter Mg Benson of Powhatan County, Virginia His property was then valued at 2,000.oo and a lot of that value was his cash crop of peach brandy. I have not traced Rebecca Ann Douglas family or Mgt Bensons family.
