E-mail from Annette E Wetzel [awetzel@juno.com]:
From "From Petersburg to Appomattox, April 2-9, 1865" by Christopher
Calkins, published by The Farmville Herald, c. 1982, page 37: "Pleasant
Retreat, or "the Flood House," was the home of Captain Joel W. Flood,
leader of Co. H, 2nd VA Cavalry, the "Appomattox Rangers." Flood was one
of the largest slave owners in the area, with he and his mother having 58
slaves between them. His son, Henry D. "Hal" Flood, was later a powerful
figure in Virginia politics in the early 20th century. This house served
as General Longstreet's headquarters while at Appomattox."
Because the house served as Longstreet's headquarters, and because
Longstreet's Corps approached the village of Appomattox Courthouse from
present-day Route 24, and because Longstreet's Corps camped between
Appomattox Courthouse and the settlement of Vera, I would hazard a guess
that "Pleasant Retreat," or its site, may be located on Route 24, near
the village of Vera.
I don't know why "Pleasant Retreat" would have been called 'the
Governor's house, ' except that both Henry D. Flood, and his son, Joel D.
Flood, were prominent VA politicians of the Byrd era. Henry D. Flood's
nephew was Harry Flood Byrd, from Winchester, who DID serve as Governor
of Virginia, from 1 Feb 1926 to 15 Jan 1930!
From "The Hornbook of Virginia History," ed. by Salmon, Emiily J. and
Edward D. C. Campbell, Jr., The Library of Virginia, c. 1994, on a list
titled Members of the U.S. Congress, 1789-1994, pages 137 & 152: "Henry
Delaware Flood (1865-1921) from Appomattox County, served U. S. House of
Representatives, 1901-1921, Democrat. Joel West Flood (1894-1964) from
Appomattox County, served U. S. House of Representatives, 1932-1933,
Democrat. Harry Flood Byrd (1887-1966) from city of Winchester, served U.
S. Senate 1933-1965, Democrat Harry Flood Byrd, Jr. (1914 - ) from City
of Winchester, served U. S. Senate 1965-1971, Democrat; 1971-1983,
