- Reigned 899-924. He defeated the Danes (918), taking East Anglia, and
also conquered Mercia (918) and Northumbria (920).
He was called "Edward the Elder"; he ruled Wessex from 899 to 925.He fought the invading Danes along with his sister Aethelflaed. In 909 he defeated them at the battle of Tettenhall. According to the book, A Short History of England, by McElwee, p. 35, he had three wives and fourteen children.
