  According to family records: "A murder/suicide took place on Saturday April 14, 1951 at the residence of Ruth Howland 428 E. Rose St. Springfield, Ohio following a lengthy quarrel over possession of their daughter, Dixie Sue, who was a witness to the shooting. Howland used a .25 caliber pistol and held his wife in his left arm while he shot her twice. Once between the eyes and once through the temple. He then turned the gun on himself and fired a bullet in his right temple."
