  • Notes
    • Drury Ledbetter who married Winnifred Lanier in Brunswick Co., VA sold his land on 5 January 1771, according to Brunswick Co., VA land records. It lists his wife "Winnefred" on the deed. (Brunswick Co. Deed Book 10, 1770-1773, pp. 76-78. He inherited the land from his father, Henry Ledbetter. (Brunswick Co. VA Will Book 3, 1751-1769, p. 13.

Drury and Winnifred moved to Anson Co. NC where is first listed as being appointed to help lay out a road in 1771. In January 1772, he is listed as his majesty's Commssion of the Peace for Anson Co., NC (Anson Co., NC Abstracts of Early Records by May Wilson McBee, p. 75.

He served a Colonel of the Militia in Anson Co. during the American Revolution. Montgomery Co., NC was formed from the northern part of Anson Co. in 1779. He is listed on the 1782 tax list in that county. He also served as a member of the legislature from that county.

By 1790, he is listed on an early Wilkes Co., GA Tax List (Wilkes Co. GA Tax Records 1785-1805, Vol I, p. 10)

In the Wilkes Co. Court House in Wilkes Co., GA Deed Book G, pp. 176-177, we found a bill of sale, Drury Ledbetter to Buckner Harris, for some slaves, furnishing, horses, cattle, and a wagon. Buckner Harris later sold the slaves (in 1804) to Washington Ledbetter, son of Drury.

On 13 Sept 1801 Drury Ledbetter signed two notes to Charles Irwin (Wilkes Co., GA Minutes - Inferior Court, 1801-1803, p. 81.

That is the last record until on 6 April 1802, Hugh Darby petitions to have two notes in the amount of twenty dollars signed in 1801 by Drury Ledbetter "In his lifetime", paid, so we know that he died sometime after that

His widow married a second time after 1802 to James McCleskey of neighboring Clarke Co., GA. She died in Hall Co., GA at the age of 98. There is a court case in Hall County regarding settlement of hers and her 2nd husband's estate. (Administrators of James McClesky vs. Washington Ledbetter [her son] 1 GA 551.

We have been to Brunswick Co., VA, Wilkes Co., GA, Greene Co., GA, Hall Co.,GA and the GA Archives researching.
