BIOGRAPHY: Notes of Nancy Willard Crompton:
(b. 1819 Manorhamilton, Ireland; d. 1897 Paris) Painter, etcher (landscapes, views of NYC) act. NYC from 1855, Europe. One of the earliest Amer. women landscape painters, she supported herself and two daughters Kathleen Honora and Elizabeth Eleanor through sales of her art. Both daughters were trained by her and became artists sharing their mother's studio. They traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, and the U.S. Greatorex was one of the first artists to paint in the Colo. Springs area, sent there by G. P. Putnam in 1873 to procure sketches for a volume "Summer Etchings in Colorado." Two books were published of her etchings and text recording travels in Germany: "The Homes of Obermmergau" (1872) and "Etchings in Nuremburg" (1875). She was best known for her paintings and pen and ink sketches of New York scenes, some painted on panels and woodwork salvaged from old historical houses and churches.
