    • Born in Monroe Co., Michigan, 24 Sep. 1829. He crossed the plains to California in company with A. French and Nicholas Rollins Harris, arriving 10 Oct. 1852. Soon after he proceeded to Corte Madera, Marin County. At the end of eight months he moved to Negro Hill, Eldorado County, CA, where he resided until 28 Nov 1853, when he came to Santa Clara County, and settled in Calaveras Valley, Milpitas township, taking up the ground upon which he was residing when this book was written (1881). About six years ago (1875?) he disposed of his property to Spring Valley Water Company, who purchased the valley,which he still rents from that corporation. Mr. Wells has been a School Trustee and Roadmaster of the district for several years. Married in 1856, to Parthena C. Ogan, a native of Missouri, dtr of James Martin Ogan (Marriage recorded in Santa Clara County marriage records, Volume A, page 93). She died Oct 18, 1875, of consumption. By this marriage they had Martha Ann and Mary Jane (twins) born 8 Aug 1858; Leona, born 26 Dec. 1867. He married secondly, 1 Oct 1877, Martha Brown, and has one child, Maurice M., born 5 Jan. 1880.
