He and his brother, John, were murdered in what is known as the "Tear Down" murders in Greenfield Township, Warren Co., Iowa. This action followed a long neighborhood dispute which resulted from the disappearance of George and John's father's corn from his corncrib. David make the charge against the neighbor he suspected numerous times and several neighbors lined up with the party David charged. After a church meeting in which two ministers tried to calm both sides, both parties left the church and followed and same road on their way home. Soon a scuffle developed and shortly it got out of hand and knives and revolvers were introduced. By the time the fight ended, George was killed by the knife wounds and John was shot to death. Their father was seriously injured.

This comes from the files of Larry Warren of Des Moines, Iowa. He has done extensive research on the Howery families which connect to the Ashworth families.
