Notes |
- Born in Fauquier county, Virginia, November 15, 1844, son of Rev. John J. Royall and Anna K. Taylor, his wife. His education was given him by his mother and by his grandmother, who was a sister of Chief Justice Marshall. In March, 1862, when a little more than seventeen years old, he entered the Confederate army, and took part in all its great battles until March, 1864, when he was wounded and taken prisoner. After the war he studied law under William Green, in Richmond, was admitted to the bar, and engaged in practice in Richmond, and was one of the most prominent attorneys. He was especially prominent as attorney for the holders of state bonds, who after years of litigation finally agreed to compromise. He married Judith Page Aylett, daughter of Patrick Henry Aylett and Emily Rutherfoord, his wife.
