Educated at Powell's School for girls, an Episcopal school in Richmond. She was in Pontotoc, Miss. at the outbreak of the war, but her bother Clay went for her, and they finally reached their home on Henry Co., after a dangerous and exciting trip across the country. Later she spent a lot of time nursing the sick and wounded in Richmond. She taught school in Va. and NC for several years.
