- FORTUNATUS COSBY, JR., was a native of Kentucky, born near Louisville, May 2, 1802, and died in that city June 16, 1871, aged 69. His father, after whom he was named, was a prominent lawyer, member of the Ky. legislature, and circuit judge; died in 1846, aged 81. The son was a student at Transylvania University; but graduated at Yale College; studied law, but did not follow it steadily; was a clerk in the U. S. treasury department at Washington city, and for several years U. S. consul at Geneva, Switzerland. Between 1840 and 1850, Mr. Cosby was a frequent contributor of charming poems and prose to several Louisville newspapers.
