In a legislative capacity he was Member of the State Senate 1781-85, and represented Buckingham for the House of Delegates 1788-90. "A man of unbounded popularity and great influence, he was a devoted patriot, making large concessions without compensation, a lion when roused but naturally as gentle as a lamb, and generous as a prince."
