WILLIAM WIRT HENRY, A.M., LL.D. of Richmond, Virginia; Lawyer and Historian; b. at Red Hill, Charlotte County, Virginia, 14th February, 1831; d. 5th December, 1900; educated at the University of Virginia, which he entered in 1847 [p.246] and where he graduated A.M., 1850; admitted to the bar, 1853; he opposed secession in 1861 but joined his State's movement and enlisted in an artillery company commanded by Capt. Charles BRUCE, serving in North Carolina and Georgia; State Attorney for Charlotte County, removed to Richmond, 1873, and represented that city in the House of Delegates, 1877-1878, and the State Senate 1879-1880; was President of the Virginia Historical Society and the American Historical Association; Trustee of the Peabody Educational Fund; received the Honorary Degree of LL.D., from Washington and Lee University. Author of "Reply to Attack of Thomas JEFFERSON on Patrick HENRY'S Rescue of Captain SMTTH by Pocahontas;" "Patrick Henry the Earliest Advocate of Independence, " "The First Legislative Body in America;" "The Trial of Aaron BURR for Treason;" "The Westminster Assembly of Divines;" "The Life, Correspondence and Speeches of Patrick Henry," and of numerous magazine articles; m. 8th November, 1854, Lucy Gray MARSHALL, dau. of Col. James Pulliam and Elizabeth Edmunds (WATKINS) MARSHALL of Charlotte County, Virginia. Colonel MARSHALL was a soldier in the War of 1812.
