"Dandridge's of Virginia" by Wilson Miles Cary (p 91) lists NWD, Jr. as the husband of Martha Fontaine (m. 13 Jul 1797). Same ref. has him dying in 1810. Cary's source is George N. Mackenzi's Colonial Families of the US, vol. 1, p. 117-118.

Mark Wilborne's paper "From Virginia with Love" lists (p. 19) NWD, Jr.'s only wife as Sally Watson.

"Colonial Families in Virginia" p.118, lists NWD[Jr.], b. 26 Oct 1762; d. 26 Jul 1847; m. 13 Jul 1797, Martha Fontaine, b. 4 Jul 1781; d. 12 Sep 1845.

"Reportedly, The Reverend Sergeant Allen captured [on or soon after
October 19, 1781] a Cremona Violin in the redoubt at Yorktown and
presented it to William Dandridge as he was a very fine "fiddler". His brother-in-law, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson were also good violinists and they often joined him in playing the minuet at "Elsing Green" [his grandfather's home]. The violin is now in the possession of William Dandridge's Great Granddaughter (unnamed)." p.145, "History of Henry County", Judith Park Hill. This is may well be inaccurate: This William Dandridge was not born until 1750 and Unity West Dandridge, his grandmother, died in 1753; "Elsing Green" was sold shortly thereafter. A more likely possibility is that William joined with P. Henry and T. Jefferson at N.W. Dandridge's home in western Hanover Co.

According to R.B. Lancaster's Sketch of Early History of Hanover Co. p.39 "William Dandridge of Hanover, acting as commissary for the troops at Yorktown, seized 280 gallons of liquor belonging to Robert Pollard of Culpeper and conveyed it to Yorktown for the use of the Virginia troops under the command of General Nelson (Hennings Statutes, Vol. 13, p. 621, records that Pollard was reimbursed at a later date, by act of Dec 28, 1792)"

William was the family's founder in America, settling in VA. In January 1717 William built a house & wharf at Hampton. On 19 July 1717, William & Gov. Alexander Spotswood, signed a charter-party for a vessel belonging to William, who agreed to transport 20 men to SC. In another deed of 1719, he is described as "late of Hampton, now of King William County". Wilson Miles Cary wrote for the William & Mary College Quarterly (Vol V) "His removal to that county was doubtless occasioned by a settlement of 1247 acres in the parish of St. Johns made March 1719, on his marriage with Unity, only child of Col. Nathaniel West. In 1727 he became a member of the Colonial Council, and on Dec. 14th of that year he is appointed with Col. Byrd one of the (3) commissioners to settle the dividing line between Virginia and NC. In 1728 he has a grant of 496 acres of Allen's Creek, in Hanover, adjoining his King William lands...In 1737 it is stated in the Virginia Gazette that Wm. would soon be given the command of one of his Majesty's ships, and later on there occurs mention of the presentation to him of a sword by the Duke of Montagu. In Feb. 1741, Capt. Wm D. commanded the Wold and in Nov. he was transferred to the South Sea...He subsequently commanded the man-of-war Ludlow Castle.

In 1743 the 'colonel-captain' died, while on a visit to his Hanover estates. His will is dated 25 Aug 1743." Elsing Green was the name of his King William Co., VA estate. He also served as a burgess. His brother, John, was the father of Martha, who married President George Washington.

Arrived in VA w/Cpt Christopher Newport in 1608, and named a grantee of
the 2nd charter of the London Co. in 1609. As President of the colony's
Council, assumed the role of Chief Executive after the overthrow of Cpt
John Smith in September 1609, but was soon replaced by George Percy.
Between voyages to England and elsewhere, continued to serve as a member
of the VA Council; also appointed to other offices in Va. including
Commander at Jamestown in 1612 and Master of the Ordnance in 1617.
Commissioned Admiral of New England in November 1622, but quickly
returned to Va. after encountering resistance from the fishermen in the
area. As President of the Council, became Acting Governor of Va. in
November 1627 following the death of Gov. George Yeardley, and served in
that capacity until March 1629.

West's first period as Chief Executive lasted only about 2 weeks, but his
second term was both longer and more significant. By the late 1620's, Va.
has passed through its earliest growing pains and, despite a
persistently high death rate, the colony's population was beginning to
increase dramatically. In Feb 1628, for example, it was reported that
1,000 immigrants to Va. had been "lately received." West's tenure was
also marked by an increasing awareness of the importance of tobacco to
Va.'s economy, and in March 1628 a colonial assembly, meeting on an ad
hoc basis and at the Crown's suggestion, considered the question of a
royal proclamation which forbade the importation of tobacco into England
w/o the king's license.

Although he sailed for England in 1629, West returned to Va. by 1631. He
appears to have resumed his seat on the colony's Council, since in Feb
1633 he is noted as being present at one of that body's sessions. He died
in Va. probably in early 1634. (Bio Directory of Amer Colonial and Rev.
Governors, John Raimo)

R. J. Dandridge Jr.'s memory of his grandmother was that she was nearly always silent. He remembers her sitting in the bathroom giving herself an injection of insulin; rolling out biscuits in her kitchen on Dye Plant Road; and seeing her sitting/lying in bed in a Lynchburg hospital after she had had her leg amputated. He wondered often why his he never saw his grandmothers together and why they weren't friends.

According to Janet Lee Dandridge, who was taken under Lucille's wing and visited once for several days with John and Annie Dandridge, Annie made wonderful biscuits.

Annie was a Primitive Baptist and possibly a member of Camp Branch Prim. Baptist Church on Figsbrough Rd. or Moons Creek Prim. Baptist Church in Providence N.C. where her mother is buried. Since Primitive Baptists have no ordained ministry, they often met only once per month.

He was a splendid physician; and soon built up a large practice. Dr. Dandridge was an unusually handsome, cultured man, and his death brought sorrow to hundreds of admirers and friends. Was told by his granddaughter Mary (Dandridge) Main that "his nanny, Aunt Easter probably spoiled him" and that he did not have any [self] discipline. This could be interpreted to mean that he drank too much or that he may have become involved with other women.

Dr. Dandridge and his wife, Susan W. Rangeley, were estranged over the last years of his life. She moved to and kept a home in Martinsville; it was stated that his daughters Una and Annie would have nothing to do with him.

Was told by Martha A. Anthony that she had heard the reasons Susan Rangeley left him was because he had a drinking problem and that there were rumors he fathered a child/children by a black mistress. Martha also said that she believed (no basis stated) that Susan left him because RBD was not supporting her in the manner she would like (this is the preferred response!). Virginia (Puckett) Hodnett said that she had not heard why RBD and SWR separated - "that sort of thing just wasn't talked about much." She, too, thought he may have had a drinking problem; but that "times were tough after the war."

Mary Main said that, after his body was discovered by his housekeeper, his sons John Robert, William (her father), and possibly Thomas, carried his body from his home to [what is now] the Horsepasture Christian church a few miles away by wagon. It was a cold and blustery February day and only a very few attended the funeral. Mary did not believe that his estranged wife or daughters attended the ceremony. As of 1981, there was no marker; RBD's final resting place was identified only in church records "Dr. Dandridge - d: 1907", there was no stone. A few years later, Mary and Martha Anthony arranged, through the United Daughters of the Confederacy to have a marker placed at his grave site.

From impressions by Virginia Puckett, there seems to have been a situation in which the girls (Annie and Una) seemed to remain close and identify with their mother.
