Abt 389 - 477 (88 years)
Generation: 1
1. | Genseric "The Lame", King of the Vandals of Spain and Africa was born about 389 in Lake Balaton, Hungary (son of Godigisel, King of the Hasdingi Vandals and Flora); died on 25 Jan 477 in Carthage. Notes:
Vandals were a Germanic people settled in the 4th century AD in eastern Europe (where Silesia still bears the name of one section of the Vandals, the Silings). In the early 5th century, they invaded Roman Gaul and Spain with other tribes (probably leaving another trace of their presence in the name of Andalusia), and then crossed over to Africa under the leadership of one of the ablest rulers of the age, Gaiseric (d 477). They captured Carthage and established a kingdom based in what is now Tunisia but extended by naval power to include for a while Sicily, Sardinia and other islands - they sacked Rome itself in 455. However, the later Vandal kings proved unable to maintain their power, and their dominions were reconquered by a Byzantine expedition in 534. [Ref: Tapsell p295]
Genseric married Licinia Eudoxia, Princess of the Eastern Roman Empire about 444 in Spain. Licinia (daughter of Theodosius II "The Great", Eastern Roman Emperor and Aelia Eudocia Augusta) was born in Apr 422 in Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey; died in Apr 462 in Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey.
