    Came to Ca with Dudley Wells and Fielding Wells in 185?. Was elected Sheriff of Calaveras County in 1862, the same year he married. Santa Clara County marriage records, Volume 1, page 52. Nicholas R. Harris was born in Boston Mass. The family moved to Ann Arbor, Mich. He lived there until he was seventeen-1852. He then left for California with two friends, Dudley Wells and Alfred French. Harris and Wells settled in Calaveras Valley.

    James S. was born in St. Charles County, MO. as the family was moving to Boone Co., MO. After marrying (1837) in Rocheport, MO, he and Elizabeth moved in 1838 to near Meadville, Linn Co., MO. James and his brother Irvin were noted hunters in Linn Co., MO. With five children the family moved by horse drawn-wagons to San Jose, California via the Carson Pass in 1853 with brother John Martin Ogan and their families. -I do certify that I joined in the bonds of matrimony on the 12th day of November 1837 Mr. James Ogan of Linn County, Mo to Miss Elizabeth Harris of Boone County, MO & state aforesaid given under my hand this 9th day of February 1838.- James W. Daly, J.P. Recorded Feby 9th 1838 Roger N. Todd clerk. In 1869 James S. moved his family from the San Jose area by wagon to Carpinteria, CA. James was 6 feet 2 in. James S. wife Elizabeth and Lucy Ann Harris (John Martin (Jack) Ogan's wife) were sisters.     Notes:

    Elizabeth Berry is perhaps named after James Berry, her great uncle, a famous Indian fighter in Kentucky. James Berry's home was on the headwaters of Tate's Creek near Irvine's Lick Station, within a short distance of Richmond, KY, where he died. Elizabeth is related to the Daniel Boone and Kit Carson through her grandmother, Nancy Grubbs. There is likelihood of Indian (Cherokee, Blackfeet (of Virginia) or Choctaw) ancestry through the Garlands. She quit smoking her pipe at age 70 according to Aunt Sis (Elizabeth Ogan Morris). 1900 Carpinteria, Santa Barbara Co., CA with dtr Millie.

In 1826 served on a Boone Co., MO jury. In 1830: nearby households were David, Thomas, Tyre. On 26 Aug 1839, Boone County, Higgason Harris and A.W. Turner witnessed the will of William Jones, Sr.

    Nancy Garland may have been 1/2 Native American. Garlands in early Kentucky ( from Alicia Towster): On 8 May 1783 Peter Garland of VA obtained a military bounty for 4000 acres in KY due for 3 years as a Captain in the Continental Line. On 22 Nov 1783, Lincoln Co. (later Madison Co), KY, Jno Garland filed 3 entries on a branch of Casey's Creek/River; on 1 Jan 1784, an entry below Bryant's Lick; total size about 70,000 acres. In 1800, John Garland and Thomas Garland appear on Madison Co. tax lists (1800 census of KY). Thomas Garland, over 45, appears in the 1810 Madison Co., KY census. Marriages: 16 Dec 1800, Madison Co., KY, Higgason Harris m. Nancy Garland. 2 Jun 1803, Madison Co., KY, Tyre Harris m. Sally Garland. In 1805, Madison Co., KY, Robert Garland married Jane Flack (likely the same Robert that appears in Warren County, KY, with Higgason Harris in 1810; he does not, however, appear on the 1830 census index for Missouri).
