On Dec. 10, 1868 Escambia County was formed. Brewton became a town on Feb. 13, 1885. Originally known as Newport because it became a new port with barges making runs to Pensacola, Fl and back on the Murder and Burnt Corn Creeks. The coming of the railroad in 1861 and building of a depot run by Edmund Troupe Brewton as Station Agent brought about the eventual change of the name of that place of Brewton Station, later shortened to Brewton.
Edmund married Martha A. Coleman. Martha was born on 11 Feb 1835; died on 10 Oct 1883. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
