Benjamin Bruton Fontaine

Notes:

Moved from Warrenton, GA to Tuscaloosa, AL in 1821. He was an attorney in Tuscaloosa in 1835 to 1838 and a State Senator in 1831.

Moved to Mobile, AL, in 1835.

1. John Thomas Fontaine was born on 10 Feb 1821.
2. Mary Elizabeth Fontaine was born on 8 Apr 1825; died on 25 Jul 1863; was buried in Old Linwood Cemetery, Columbus, GA.
3. Millicent Clarissa Fontaine was born on 18 Aug 1828 in Tuscaloosa, AL; died on 16 Oct 1860 in Bullock County, AL.
4. Benjamin Beall Fontaine was born on 7 Jan 1830 in Tuscaloosa, AL; died on 13 Feb 1870.
5. Alfred Battle Fontaine was born on 23 Aug 1832 in Tuscaloosa, AL; died on 18 May 1885 in Union Springs, Bullock County, AL.
6. Robert Augustus Fontaine was born on 8 Nov 1837 in Mobile, Mobile County, AL.

Notes:

It appears that all of the children of Thomas and Clarissa, except Benjamin, were born in South Carolina. The 1850 census of Mobile, Alabama, gives Benjamin's place of birth as Georgia.

Notes:

Was apprenticed to a carpenter about 1736. Completed his apprenticeship in 1743 and moved to New Bern, North Carolina, with his brother, John, where they became house joiners. Later moved to Dobbs County, North Carolina sometime before 1769 and remained there until at least January, 1773. Subsequently moved to Charleston Precinct, and Edistoe, S.C.,

Francis married Ann Jasper about 1745 in New Bern, Craven County, NC. Ann was born in 1712/1734 in North Carolina, USA; died in 1756/1821 in South Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Entered Trinity College in June 1712. Enrolled in the Inns of Court at the Temple, in London, to study law, but later returned to Dublin to prepare for the ministry.

Received B.A. degree in 1716 and Master of Arts degree in 1719 from Trinity College in Dublin. Married in 1720 and sailed for America in 1721 where he became Rector of St. Margaret's Parish in King William County, Virginia.

In 1723, became Rector of York-Hampton Parish and apparently remained there for the remainder of his life. On February 2, 1727, was appointed Chaplain of the House of Burgesses. In the same year, he was appointed to the faculty of William and Mary College where he established the Department of Oriental Languages (Hebrew).

Francis married Mary Glannison on 4 Jan 1720 in Westminster, Middlesex, England. Mary was born in 1679/1701 in IRL; died in 1733 in Williamsburg, VA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
