[Broderbund WFT Vol. 11, Ed. 1, Tree #0089]

According to Granddaughter Lucille Dandridge who stayed with her during her last 3 years of high school, Susan made her come straight home from school with out being allowed to play basketball "because Tom, her favorite son (Will and Daddy [John] resented it), might come [to supper] early".

Again according to Lucille, Susan R. Dandridge was a "little general" in her home; if she went to bed at 8:00, everyone went to bed at 8:00. Once her granddaughter Elizabeth Dandridge answered the telephone and was angrily ordered to never answer the phone while she, Susan, was home. There was one person (probably a teacher at nearby Martinsville High School) she had known for a long time who roomed with her.

Virginia (Puckett) Hodnett said that Susan R. Dandridge was "just the mildest sort of person" who wasn't much of a housekeeper (used to other people running the household - wouldn't even know her way around a kitchen). Virginia said that Susan's father and brothers ran a tannery and store in Stuart, Va. and that her home was where the old hotel (now burned) was located.

Neither Harry nor Lucille, her grandchildren were aware that Susan and Robert Bolling Dandridge had separated before his death; it appears Susan never talked of her husband to her grandchildren. Virginia Hodnett was aware but it "just wasn't something people talked about back then". She believed "the reason might have been that Robert Bolling "may have had a drinking problem - times were hard!". Grandson Hugh also made mentioned that he had heard Robert Bolling Dandridge had a drinking problem.

Susan married Robert Bolling Dandridge in Nov 1866 in Henry County, VA. Robert (son of Jr. William Alexander Dandridge and Sarah Virginia Nicholds) was born on 6 Aug 1838 in Henry County, VA; died on 13 Feb 1907 in Horsepasture, Henry County, VA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
