CELSUS RICE ------- Died at Home in Jefferson City at 7:20 p.m. Thursday--Funeral Services in Ashland Saturday ------- Funerel [sic] services for Mrs. Celsus D. Rice were held at the Baptist church in Ashland at 2 o'clock last Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by the Rev. H.P. Cheavens. Burial in the New Salem Cemetery followed. News came from Jefferson City at 4 o'clock last Thursday afternoon that there was no hope for Mrs. Rice. AT 7:20 she passed away. News of her death was a great shock to her multitude of friends at the old home. Deceased is survived by her husband, two sons, Herbert F. Rice, editor of the Lexington News, and Howard Rice, and one daughter, Miss Susan Rice, who have the heartfelt sympathy of all. Laura Green Rice was born at Centertown, Mo., July 21, 1870, daughter of J. G. and Susan Green. She came to Ashland about 1897 as a school teacher. May 23, 1899, she was married to Celsus D. Rice. Soon after her marriage, she united with the Baptist church. News of the death of Mrs. Rice will be learned with sincere regret by all her former pupils, as well as all who enjoyed her acquaintance and friendship. It can truthfully be said that the world is a better place because Laura Green Rice lived in it. Ashland Bugle, 30 December 1937, p. 1, col. 2: C.D.     John and Isabelle have an infant daughter buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery but no dates are shown.

    John was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church from the time he was twenty-three years old. He was also a member of the Ashland Lodge AF&AM, and a member of the Grange.
