Generation: 1

  1. 1.  George See was born in 1755 in Moorefield, Hardy County, WV (son of Frederick Michael See and Catherine Vanderpol); died in 1835 in Warren Twp., Marion County, MO.

    Notes:

George was in the Revolutionary War. In a copy of John Kippers' Rev. War papers from Monroe Co., Mo. George said that he was 80 years old and that he knew John Kippers and that they were soldiers together. George named the battles and Arbuckle as the Captain and that he was in the army in 1777 and 1778. However DAR records state that he married Martha George in Greenbriar Co., Va.

George wrote in a letter that he had a brother named John See at Flat Rock, Indiana and Rev. John See did live in Flat Rock, Indiana at that time.

Letter sent to my father Joe B. See in 1956 stated that George went to Mo. about 1810. Some of his sons came later.

Another letter sent to Joe B. See in 1966 from a Harry See of Monroe City, Mo. stated that George went to Monroe City, Mo.. abt 1815 or 1818 and that George applied for a pension in 1835, about the same time John Kippers did.

DAR records state that their marriage took place on Oct. 25, 1777 even though he stated he was in the service at that time when filing for a pension later.

Joe See's research found that a George See disposed of his farm, 383 acres of land, in Hampshire Co., Va., and purchased 218 acres of the west side of Tygarts Valley River in the Caplinger Settlement in 1785. Several old genealogists wrote Joe and gave the list of his children.

This is an assumption on my part, Harold J. See, that it is one and the same George See (1998) so I will connect them until some one lets me know otherwise.

George married Martha George on 25 Dec 1777 in Alderson, Greenbrier, West Virginia, USA. Martha was born before 1755 in Hampshire County, WV; died in 1810 in Logan County, KY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    The Muddy Creek Massacre

On Saturday, July 16, 1763, a party of 80 to 90 Shawnees, led by Hakolesqua, better known as Cornstalk, and assisted by the great war chief Puksinwah, crossed over the Ohio and swept up the Kanawha River on a murderous rampage. Without warning the Indians killed and scalped Fredrick Michael See and son-in-law Littleberry Roach. Records state that Catherine and seven children were taken prisoner by the Shawnee Indians and held captive at Old Town for about one year. Then there was a prisoner exchange however the youngest son of Catherine, John, was left behind and raised by an Indian family that had lost a son. Later Johns' uncle, Adam See, brother of Michael, rescued him and took John back to Hampshire Co., Va. and raised him. Adam made the arrangements for ransom for Catherine and the other children.
