    He was educated at Hampden Sidney and William & Mary Colleges, Va., was a member of the company of students that fought at Yorktown under Col. Joseph Cabell, Sr.; he applied himself to farming with success but finally determined to follow his sisters to Ky. and sold "Repton" to Gov. William Cabell, who changed its name to "Montevideo"; was a captain prior to 1787; one of the trustees for the town of Greensville (1788) and for Warminster Academy in Amherst Co. (1791-95); he was owner of a noted horse called "Hyder Ali" which was sold to Col. Samuel J. Cabell (1793).

    Joseph married Pocahontas Rebecca Bolling in 1783 in Bollingbroke House, Petersburg, VA. Pocahontas (daughter of Robert Bolling and Susannah Watson) was born about 1766 in Bollingbroke House, Petersburg, VA; died in 1803 in Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    He was Justice of the Peace for Albemarle 1760, Major of Militia 1762, Burgess for Buckingham 1768-71 for Amherst 1772-75, member of Convention 1775-76, a Commissioner in 1776, Pay-master to the troops that fought at Point Pleasant under Gen. Andrew Lewis, vestryman for Amherst in 1776, Justice for ibid 1777, County Lieutenant in 1777, and was succeeded in 1780 by Col. Hugh Rose. He commanded a regiment of Militia to which were attached the students of William and Mary College at the siege of Yorktown, and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. In a legislative capacity he was Member of the State Senate 1781-85, and represented Buckingham for the House of Delegates 1788-90. "A man of unbounded popularity and great influence, he was a devoted patriot, making large concessions without compensation, a lion when roused but naturally as gentle as a lamb, and generous as a prince."

    Joseph married Mary Hopkins on 18 Oct 1752 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, USA.     Mary, daughter of Mary Hopkins and Joseph Cabell, became the wife of John Breckinridge, then of Botetourt County, but subsequently United States Senator from Kentucky, and Mr. Jefferson's Attorney General. Mr. Cabell, who had bought the glebe of St. Anne's on the south fork of Totier, presented it to his daughter, and there Mr. Breckinridge made his residence from 1785 to 1793, when he removed to Kentucky. During that time he was a member of the Albemarle bar, and in 1792 in the interval between the resignation of the first John Nicholas, and the appointment of the second, as Clerk of the county, he acted as Clerk pro tem. His two eldest children were born in Albemarle, one of whom was the father of the Vice President.
