    Marshall Strother Gaines was educated in Fayetteville, Ark. and began clerking in a store in that city at the age of eighteen. After several years he moved to Greenwood, Ark. and established a mercantile business of his own. In 1883 he formed a partnership with Thos. E. Little and the firm was named L & G. This company continued until December 1887 when the partnership was dissolved by mutual agreement and the firm became M. S. Gaines and Company. Their stock of merchandise was the largest in Greenwood and the business was successful. He was a Democrat; a member of the school board of Greenwood. for six years; a Master Mason; a K of H; and he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
