Burgess from New Kent County, 1772 to 1775, member of Conventions of 1775 and 1776 and secretary to General Washington, his brother-in-law.

The Virginia Gazette recorded his death, "Hon. Bartholomew Dandridge of New Kent, Judge of the General Court." His sister, Mrs. George Washington was notified of his death. George's diary entry of Sunday, April 24, 1785 reads: "An express arrived with the account of the deaths of Mrs. Dandridge & Mr. B. Dandridge, the mother & brother of Mrs. Washington." Bartholomew was doubtless named for his father's friend Bartholomew Selden, a lawyer of Elizabeth City County. Our Bartholomew was a Burgess & member of the VA Convention of 1776, Member of the Privy Council & Judge of the General Court.

Bartholomew married Elizabeth Macon in 1756/1778. Elizabeth was born about 1742; died in 1759/1836. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John Dandridge was Burgess from King William County, and in 1747 was Clerk of New Kent County.

John was a planter. He was buried in St. George's churchyard. His tombstone reads: "Here lies interred the Body of Col. John Dandridge of New Kent County, who Departed this life the 31st day of August 1756, aged 56 years."

The date of his death varies from the Bible record of his death.

In 1722, John had a grant from Elizabeth County. In 1747 he was clerk of New Kent County, VA. His daughter Elizabeth married Leonard Henley. Their family Bible listed the birth & death dates of John's family. John had lived near Williamsburg.

According to the William & Mary College Quarterly, Vol V, John "matriculated at New College, May 13, 1696, became M.A., 1702, and vicar of Weston Beggard, Co. Hereford, in 1705."

In the same issue is a section "Note By The Editor - The family account of Mrs. L. A. Page, wife of Mann Page, of Greenland, Gloucester County, VA, has the following statement, which seems to confirm the belief that the emigrants, William and John Dandridge, were brothers:

'Mamma's Grandfather Langbourn emigrated to this country with his uncles, the Dandridges, leaving a sister, Mary Langbourn, living in the city of London. He married, as I have already stated, a Miss [Susanna] Smith, of Shooter's Hill, Middlesex county. His wife & himself both died when their two children were quite young. William remained with his Dandridge relations, & Mary lived with her Aunt Throckmorton, whose son she married.

William entered the Rev. army when quite a youth, & acted as aide to La Fayette to whom he became quite attached, & afterwards visited him in France. He was very much attached to his Dandridge relations, having been brought up among them, particularly to his Cousin Martha Dandridge, afterwards Mrs. Washington, & to another cousin, Mrs. Dandridge Claiborne, he formed an early romantic attachment, & whose daughter Elizabeth he subsequently married.

The tombstone of the first William Langbourn, at his place in King Wm. Co., on the Pamunky River, states that he was the son of Robert and Mary Langbourn, of Fetter Lane, London, and it bears the Langbourn arms impaling Dandridge. The end of the note says to see the Quarterly IV, 166 & 184.

John married Bridget Dugdale on 14 Dec 1676 in St Mary Magdalene, Old Fish St, London, Middlesex, England. Bridget (daughter of Christopher Dugdale) was born before 23 Jun 1651 in Litchfield, Hampshire, England; died in 1731 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
