    House of Burgesses, 1st Governor of Virginia, & Senator.

    Some time, but not very long prior to 1730, John Henry came directly from Scotland to Virginia. In April, 1733, his brother, Patrick Henry, an Episcopalian minister, also came over.

    The two brothers were very much attached to each other and ever afterwards lived not far apart. They were cousins of David Henry, who went from Scotland to London at the age of fourteen, and became a journeyman printer in the same office with Benjamin Franklin. He married a sister of Edward Cave, the founder of the "Gentleman's Magazine," in London.

    David was for more than fifty years associate editor of the Magazine, and in that publication describes his Henry kin as "more respected for their good sense and superior education than for their riches, as at every neighborhood meeting they were among the foremost."

    EXTRACT OF NWD's 24 SEP 1782;

    In the name of God Amen I Nathaniel West Dandridge of the Co. of Hanover being infirm, but of sound & disposing memory, do make this my last will and testament for settling my temporal concerns.

    Imprimis. I give my beloved wife Jane [Pollard?] Dandridge...during her natural life and after her death I give the said land to my son William Dandridge and his heirs, and the personals to be sold and the money equally divided between my four daughters Dorothea Henry, Elizabeth Dandridge, Anna Catharina Dandridge, and Mary Claiborne Dandridge. I also give my wife a black mare called hers, as her absolute property -

    Item. I give to each of my sons William, Alexr. Spotswood, John, Robert, and Nathaniel [West Dandridge, Jr.] and to his heirs the lands laid off and allotted to them respectively, together with the slaves and other things I have delivered to them; for which I intend to make them deeds in my life time, which if I do, will fulfill this part of my will -

    Item. I give to my daughter Dorothea Henry...; to my daughter Elizabeth...; to my daughter Anna Catharina...; and to my daughter Mary C. Dandridge...: Nevertheless each of my said daughters shall account...and to my daughter [Dorothea Dandridge] Henry to account also for Patty [slave] which I gave her and is since dead -

    Item. All of the residue of my slaves... I give to be equally divided between my s[ai]d daughters Dorothea, Elizabeth, Anna Catharina & Mary Claibourn and their respective heirs...so as to make an equal division as before directed.

    Item. All the rest of my estate I give to my Executors or the survivor of them in trust to sell the same and the money to be equally divided between my said four daughters Dorothea, Elizabeth, Anna Katherina and Mary Claibourn and their respective Executors and Adm[inistrator]s.
