  James S. was born in St. Charles County, MO. as the family was moving to Boone Co., MO. After marrying (1837) in Rocheport, MO, he and Elizabeth moved in 1838 to near Meadville, Linn Co., MO. James and his brother Irvin were noted hunters in Linn Co., MO. With five children the family moved by horse drawn-wagons to San Jose, California via the Carson Pass in 1853 with brother John Martin Ogan and their families. -I do certify that I joined in the bonds of matrimony on the 12th day of November 1837 Mr. James Ogan of Linn County, Mo to Miss Elizabeth Harris of Boone County, MO & state aforesaid given under my hand this 9th day of February 1838.- James W. Daly, J.P. Recorded Feby 9th 1838 Roger N. Todd clerk. In 1869 James S. moved his family from the San Jose area by wagon to Carpinteria, CA. James was 6 feet 2 in.
