  • Notes
    • GLADYS LYDIA PAYNE WAS BORN IN MUNDEN, KS. SHE LIVED IN MUNDEN AND ATTENDED SCHOOL THERE UNTIL 1904 WHEN THE FAMILY MOVED TO JEWELL CO., KS. SHE AND HER FAMILY THEN MOVED ONTO A FARM ON THE STATELINE, WHICH WAS OWNetherlands BY HER GRANDFATHER, JOHN S. GLEASON. SHE CONTINUED HER EDUCATION AT ROSE HILL SCHOOL. THEY LIVED ON THE STATE LINE UNTIL ABOUT 1910, WHEN THEY MOVED NORTH OF GUIDE ROCK, NE., TWO MILES. GLADYS AND JOHN STREETER GLEASON, HER GRANDFATHER WERE BORN THE SAME DAY, JULY 26. GLADYS WAS BAPTISED IN BURR OAK, KS. AT THE AGE OF 16 YEARS. GLADYS MARRIED ROY W. DIEHL ON SEPTEMBER 27, 1916 AT RED CLOUD, NE. GLADYS AND ROY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN, LAMAR, ILA, MELVIN, TED, SHIRLEY, JO ANN (DECEASED) AND DOROTHY JUNE. THE FIRST FIVE WERE BORN IN GUIDE ROCK, NE., JO ANN AT RED CLOUD, NE., AND DOROTHY AT COWLES, NE. GLADYS PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 9, 1988. OF NOTE WAS THE FACT THAT SHE HAD 25 GRANDCHILDREN, 43 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN AND 7 GREAT, GREATGRANDCHILDREN. MY (SHIRLEY) MEMORY OF MOM WHEN I WAS A CHILD IS RATHER DIM NOW. I REMEMBER HER TELLING US OF THEIR LIFE BACK IN THE EARLY YEARS. I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED THEY FED AND CLOTHED SEVEN CHILDREN IN THE HARD TIMES. SHE TOLD OF CANNING 200 QUARTS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ON SUMMER. ILA REMEMBERS AS SHE HELPED WITH THE CANNING. HER GRANDCHILDREN LOVED TO HEAR HER TELL OF THE "GOOD OLD DAYS" AROUND THE SUPPER TABLE. WE THINK MORE OF HER LAST YEAR WITH US----THE PATIENCE SHE HAD LIVING IN THE GOOD SAMARITAN HOME FOR 3 YEARS. ONLY HER FAITH IN CHRIST KEPT HER GOING. SHE SO LOOKED FORWARD TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS COMING TO SEE HER. I REMEMBER "MAMMA" AND WE ALL LOVED HER SO. AUNT GLADYS' WAS ONE OF THE KINDEST AND FRIENDLY PERSONS ANYONE COULD EVER HOPE TO BE AROUND. SHE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE FOR ME NO MATTER HOW SHE FELT. SHE WAS JUST A GRAND PERSON. MOTHER USED TO SAY, "NEIL YOU NEED TO STOP AND SEE THE AUNTS." WHEN I DID STOP, SHE, AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE AUNTS, WERE ALWAYS A JOY TO VISIT WITH DURING OUR SHORT STOPS.
