- Nancy Garland may have been 1/2 Native American. Garlands in early Kentucky ( from Alicia Towster): On 8 May 1783 Peter Garland of VA obtained a military bounty for 4000 acres in KY due for 3 years as a Captain in the Continental Line. On 22 Nov 1783, Lincoln Co. (later Madison Co), KY, Jno Garland filed 3 entries on a branch of Casey's Creek/River; on 1 Jan 1784, an entry below Bryant's Lick; total size about 70,000 acres. In 1800, John Garland and Thomas Garland appear on Madison Co. tax lists (1800 census of KY). Thomas Garland, over 45, appears in the 1810 Madison Co., KY census. Marriages: 16 Dec 1800, Madison Co., KY, Higgason Harris m. Nancy Garland. 2 Jun 1803, Madison Co., KY, Tyre Harris m. Sally Garland. In 1805, Madison Co., KY, Robert Garland married Jane Flack (likely the same Robert that appears in Warren County, KY, with Higgason Harris in 1810; he does not, however, appear on the 1830 census index for Missouri).
