Notes |
- From email from Winky Cherry winkycherr@aol.com:
Chan and my Aunt Bert were in an automobile accident in southern Arizona. They were wild party-type people. Alberta was not hurt. After the accident he went back east to live with his mother who took care of him. There was a lot of money there. When his mother died, Chan was sent back to Alberta. She bought a house where they lived under the same roof. They had a cook, housekeeper, and Chan had someone come in to bathe him etc. He also swam every day with assistance. Chan was paralized, could not talk because Alberta was always telling him to wipe his mouth and be quiet. He drooled and walked awkwardly with a cane. One whole side of his body was useless. He sat in a chair all day in a study. He had a measured drink at 6 PM, another at 6:30 and walked to the diner table promptly at 7PM. My grandmother ate at their house every evening. I was there on weekends and for special events when in college so I know the routine. Mary Ann brought all of her children to live in the house when Chan arrived. I think that was when she got a divorce. Anyway there were a lot of people for dinner every night. Peter Guild was very young. The other children were in grade school when I was in college. It was a tight ship. When Chan died, and the children moved out, Mary Ann bought a condo and lived by herself until Milton came to live with her the last year of his life.
This probably doesn't help nor does it reallly answer your question. To my knowledge Chan Anderson was well off and didn't work. I know Alberta and Chan had a guest ranch with paying guests somewhere south of Tucson in the wilderness when they had the accident.
From email from J A Houle artjoy@cybermesa.com:
Here's what I know and remember about him
Came from a very wealthy family in NYC. Went to either Harvard or Princeton I think. Father at one time was Ambassador to England for how long I don't know. Was the recipent of a trust fund part of the income from which he had to give to his first wife when they split the blanket. When Papa possed away he came to AZ. I think this was 1934 mas o menos a year.
Aunt Bert had divorced Jepp Gibbs and wound up with the kids and no child support in 1933, I think. She moved into our rent house (the first house Bimpa bought when we moved to Tucson - 1221 E, 5th St,) She went to work for Dr. Bledsoe as his receptionist. She also had a catering business with two other gals, but business was very slow. Chan had moved to Tucson I think divorced, but maybe pending. From the connection with these two gals, and the social whirl they moved in, Bert met Chan I think in 1935
Bimpa at that time was going through his heart problems (angina). He was confined to bed for a long period of time I don't know how long Bert and Chan had been seeing each other, but Bimpa knew him. (My dates may be a year off in all of this.) One morning I was summened to my father's bedside by Mima, and he told me that Chan's car had been in Bert's driveway all night, and that this pointed to goings on that only married people participated in. He continued that he was unable to handle the situation personally, and that I had to now be the man of the family. I was to go across the street, and tell Chan to scram, and make sure he did. Now for a sixteen, or seventeen year, old kid this seemed, to me, a heck'va hard spot to be in, but I walked slowly as possible over to 1221 putting the confrontation off as long as possible, and trying to figure out what to say. Went in the front door, and saw Chan sitting in a big easy chair reading the paper - could hear Bert fooling around out in the kitchen. I went over and stood in front of Chan and said, "Mr Anderson, my father is sick, as you know, making his being here impossible. He has instructed me to tell you to leave my sister Alberta's house now, and not to return until your intentions are honorable". Aunt Bert heard this and yelled at me, "You little squirt get out of here". I replied that I wasn't leaving until Mr. Anderson did, and just stood there in front of him. He got up, smiled, sent out the door, got in his car and left.
A short time later Chan called, and asked if he could come talk to Mima and Bimpa. He did, apologized, and asked Bimpa for Bert's hand in marriage. I don't remember the ceremony. Chan bought the Triangle T ranch in Texas Canyon which had been a guest ranch for years. Small - some thirty acres very close to Dragoon amidst all those big rocks we see driving through. No interstate hwy then with the main road between Benson and Wilcox running through Dragoon. They had a wrangler - Englishman turned cowboy - Guy Thackery, but I don't think they ever pursued guests very vigorously. Once weekly they would come to Tucson to buy provisions - always have dinner with us, and then play bridge with Mima and Bimpa. On some Sundays we would go out there for noon dinner. Roy Conn and I used to go out there hunting quail, and, in season, shooting ducks down on the ponds east of Benson.
In the late fall of 1938, going home from one of the family bridge games stone sober, Chan went to sleep driving their Lincoln Zephyr over fast - missed a curve going out into the desert flipping end over end seventeen times. That car had a high dashboad with lots of room underneath. Bert went down in that cavity but was hit on the head with a crate of eggs knocking her out. When she regained consciousness she stumbled around out in the desert until she found Chan who had gone out through the windshield landing with legs spread apart so that his pelvis was seperated. She took off her dress to cover him as much as possible, and then went to the highway to flag down a car to get help. Very few cars on those roads late at night, and it took a couple of hours before one stopped that being a state cop. Finally they wound up in St. Mary's hospital in Tucson. I was returning from a football game we played against Centenary in the midwest. When the train stopped in Dragoon, Guy Thackery got on one of our two U of A cars - found me, and told me of the accident. Bimpa met me at the station in Tucson, and took me to the hospital to see Bert. Chan required lots of transfusions, and Roy Conn and Bob Temple supplied it all. Temple being another of my football buddies Bert used to feed on Sundays.
When Chan had recovered enough to leave the hospital they moved to Rancho Santa Cruz. near Nogales. From there they went to the big house in Tucson.
Mom remembers meeting Chan's mother, and says she was a charming lady.
