- Col. DAVID A STREET, of Lunenburg county, VA, who first settled in Jackson, TN, after leaving VA, was the first classical teacher at Purdy. He was a fine scholar, wholly given up to books and teaching. He was very fond of his scholars, and entertained them at his house in the most hospitable manner. He died in Savannah, TN to which place he removed with all of his children-two boys - Thomas and D T, and two girls. His eldest son now resides in Savannah.
